Most people here will be familar with the .geek.nz 2LD that was created some years ago and now has about 1,050 domains registered under it.

However as someone who identifies themselves as nerd the .geek.nz 2LD is of no use to me, so I'd like to see the creation of a .nerd.nz 2LD for the nerd community in New Zealand. So I  wanted to see if there were other people (nerds or non-nerds) out there that felt this is a worthwhile idea?

If there's support I'll look into setting it up. There's a small fee required ($1000), of which I'm happy to contribute a large chunk, but I'll also be seeking out other donors.

Thoughts?

Whats your definition of the  difference between a nerd and a geek?

I'm not fussed about either, but I don't think both need to exist, best to have 1.

I'm not sure this would be worthwhile, surely your target audience would be even smaller than .geek.nz?

I would think it would be a subset of geek, which is a subset of nz. eg nerd.geek.nz

I always thought the word nerd was a bit offensive, whilst geek is nicer way to say nerd.

It cant only be $1000 to open a new domain ending!!  Otherwise there would be countless numbers of them..

That could be a big debate. :) Self identification is probably the thing that matters most in this case. Are there enough people who identify as nerds rather than as geeks to warrant creating the domain.

Possibly. If there's a likelihood of it reaching a couple of hundred domains I see no problem creating it. Let's not discriminate against nerds because they might be a smaller community than geeks. ;)

Some people may use it offensively, but those people are dicks. This if anything is a good reason for nerds to have a space to express their nerd identity with pride.

It is $1000 for the application, that doesn't guarantee that it gets created. It will only get created if there is a community of support for it.
