Hi all,

I've relocated back to Auckland from the middle east to get into networking, but am hanging for some work experience. I have CCNA and ITIL foundation, and probably a month away from sitting the CCNA security exam. I have experience with Linux and windows server as well. My longer term goal is a CCIE number. Anyway, I can work anywhere for free up to 30 hrs a week just to get my foot in the door. I'm applying for all sorts of positions around town but with no work history in IT it's pretty tough. Most people don't even reply to emails. Not discouraged tho, I knew it'd be hard to get in and it's just a matter of time before someone is lucky enough to snap me up! Any advice or suggestions from the community would be pretty awesome.

Cheers,

Tim

You working for free still costs the company money if you don't deliver.

Make sure your cover letter and CV are tailored for each role you are applying for. You've got to basically hit the person over the head with why you are the best choice as you have a lot of competition.

Another piece of advice... (yes, I realise you have probably already had loads),

Although you have sent out an electronic request, I have found it always helps to put on the walking shoes, arm yourself with your CV and go door knocking.

Yeah thanks Michael. Sending emails and making phone calls is pretty impersonal. You have to go into it with the attitude that they won't see how awesome you are without a face to face.
