Anyone heard why all these sites are down and why there is a multi day time frame for them to be back up again?

The Ministry of Economic Development is working to resolve an outage affecting a number of its websites.

The websites are expected to be unavailable until at least midday Wednesday 28 September. The Ministry has developed a resource on its homepage www.med.govt.nz/outage – to explain the ramifications of the outage.

We will be providing extensions to filing deadlines due during this outage and are doing all we can to minimise any inconvenience.

The following websites are affected: - Business Data - business.govt - Companies Office - Consumer Affairs - Financial Service Providers Register (FSPR) - G2B - Government Procurement Solutions - Insolvency and Trustee Service - Intellectual Property Office (IPONZ) - Motor Vehicle Traders Register - New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals - Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) - Radio Spectrum Management - Societies and Trusts - VolunteerNet.

The outage occurred on Saturday evening during preparation work to upgrade the servers hosting these websites.

We apologise unreservedly for any inconvenience experienced as a result of this outage.

Seems pretty amateur!

They went out of service a few weeks ago as well for a couple of days. Very frustrating as use for work everyday. Major meltdown imminent?

This is a fairly stunning debacle

they are actually saying that they will not be able to do real work for 2 days at Patents, and extending deadlines at the Companies Office and Financial Service Providers Register.

The Patent Office has been declared closed on Tuesday, 27 and Wednesday, 28 September 2011.

Pursuant to section 5A of the Patents Act 1953, section 189 of the Trade Marks Act 2002 and section 45A of the Designs Act 1953, the Commissioner hereby declares the Patent Office (known as the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand) closed for transaction of business on Tuesday, 27 and Wednesday, 28 September 2011.

Companies OfficeThe Register is unavailable.  Deadlines will be extended by 5 working days upon restoration of services.  This applies to Name Reservations, Company Incorporations, Annual Returns and Requests for Authority.  Our Business Service Centre is available at 0508 266 726 for assistance
Financial Service Providers Register (FSPR)The Financial Service Providers Register is suspended pursuant to section 25 of the Financial Service Providers (Registration and Dispute Resolution) Act 2008. Deadlines will be extended by 5 working days upon restoration of services.  This applies to registrations, annual confirmations and Requests for Authority. Our Business Service Centre is available at 0508 377 746 for assistance.

This would've thrown our guys upstairs into complete chaos as they rely (possibly too heavily) on data from these sites.

Maybe another dose of Conficker?

That doesn't answer the question at all.
I know for a fact that TelsrtaClear doesn't manage MED's infrastructure.
Not that there is anything to suggest that the outage is the fault of the organisation that does of course.

That is a bit of a shocker. So much for the cloud computing model. Guess they will have to go back to paper while it is sorted. Bad luck if you want to register a company or file a return.

Cloud computing? Or do you mean hosted/colocated/outsourced/virtualised environment?

Very different things...

Just got confirmation from TelstraClear that this is not related to their services.

Never mind the Companies Office - the legal eagles on twitter have pointed out that this takes out the PPSR (Personal Properties Securities Register) as well, so getting credit will be hell as there is no way to tell if a person or business has already used an asset as security on a loan until the register is back up.
