I don't think that this has been pointed out here before but Google now offers SSL on domains other than the main google.com one. You can now use, for example, https://www.google.co.nz. Its excellent to see Google stepping up to the plate with security, in this regard.

Not a fan of where google are heading though as a company. I see them as being another microsoft, as they are where microsoft were in 1995. They have a huge monopoly over search, and are essentially now an advertising company.

Yeah, gmail, google earth, calendar, maps, not to mention their little search engine. All for free. Worth a little bit of advertising in my view.

Cool. Didn't know it was available on NZ search until now.

It is not yet working correctly on NZ maps, but it is partially available if you are using the new MapsGL:

It is not just advertising they are getting to you. They are also using the data you provide to them, which they could use for anything. Basically 'you' are the product to them. Not to say that maps isn't good, but bing and microsoft maps is almost as good.

Microsoft and Google are quite different and Google has always been an advertising company!

Matt: Sure, good points, but I really don't mind about being totally private. What do I have to hide? If they glean a bit of info from my web movements to enhance my experience then so what? But you are right, I don't use facebook anymore because of exactly what you've said.
