Im using header ( Location: url) in my php code to redirect based on the outcome of an "if" statement, just wondering how many redirects I can safely use between pages before a browser eg firefox will error out? providing each redirect page has a unique filename.

As I understand, as many as you want.

What exactly are you trying to achieve?
