Do I need to have an Australian company to register a .net.au domain or can I use my NZ company?

Is your NZ business licenced to trade in Australia? There are a lot of criteria, but typically unless you're an Australian registered business you can't get a .dom.au or .net.au

The websites of virtually ever registrar will list all the details, took me about 5 mins tops to establish everything when I was looking at Aussie domains for somebody last year.

Only in Australia.  They do it better than everyone else, red tape that is.

Ever tried to send money to OZ by bank transfer to pay for something? It costs an exorbitant amount just for the bank at the other end to do the deal, plus you need all the details about the person you're sending it to, their bank account number (fair enough), their address, the banks physical address, their ABN No, it goes on and on, their eye colour, actually I joke about the eye colour but it's almost that bad.

We wanted a .com.au address but ended up parking that idea, at least for the time being.

generally you need an ABN unless its a personal domain, in which case you need proof of AU residency.

I think i is good that they restrict them. I wish NZ's ones were too, because it would stop some of the dodgy business practices, where these overseas companies register a NZ address, just to make it appear they are a NZ based business.

I did end up buying my .au domain in the end.  Had my brother take care of it, since he lives in Aus and is registered as a sole trader.

Yes, I agree to some extent, but the Aussies are a bit over the top on how they do things.  We have a business, which has a URL which is very specific to our business.  We plan to eventually operate in Australia and we wanted to protect the .com.au URL for when we go there.  However it's too hard.  There should be a way for genuine non resident business to obtain an Australian domain.

We managed to get an ABN so we could get an Australian domain to sell our products to the Aussies.

Your are entitled to an ABN if you "make supplies that are connected with Australia".

The registration process required us to provide Proof of Identity at the Australian Consulate here in New Zealand.
