Doesn't copyright expire after 50 years or something. I heard that one media company in another country recently had some laws changed to extend copyright to hundreds of years, after some of their valuable material was due to soon come out of copyright. They have some high up and powerful people.

Life of the author + 50 years. The US is/has extended that to +70 years.

I think mickey mouse stuff was due to come of of copyright soon.

Last time it was about to come out of copyright the US Gov extended it.. They will again this time to something like 200 year..

Wow, you learn something new every day. For movies it's 50 years after initial public release, but I didn't know that it was different for books.

This means some of my "legal" ebooks are actually illegal after all :(

Er, by "author" I mean person who made the thing. So it goes for movies, etc as well. Any copyrighted work is "life of the author + 50 years"

The other thing that gets me is the guilty-until-you-prove-you're-innocent-on-the-whim-of-the-MPAA-etc

When it was reported on the news, they said that ISPs will send 'up to' 3 warning letters, and after that they can then take you to the copyright authority, where you can be fined 'up to' $15000. This 'up to' thing isn't clear, as upto could range for zero up to the maximum stated. Therefore 'up to 3 letters' could potentially mean they may not send you any warning letter.

This could also mean that ISPs will be writing lots of letters and having to do a lot more admin work, and I wonder if internet fees will be going up to account for this additional compliance cost.

but its called virtual revolution

but I guess free speech is limited here what you say and type is controlled or posted links

Will this new law be targeting the people who frequently download illegally i.e people who torrent 24/7? Or will it target everyone who illegally downloads? A lot of people will be receiving fines/warnings..

The laugh will cost you. Make it worthwhile and get parliament disconnected form the internet. Politicians will learn how incorrect this legislation.

I would have thought what was far more likely is people spoof their (Parliament/Ministers Home BB etc) IP's onto a torrent tracker and let RIAA do the dirty work.

Also a few links onto Facebook and a Petition to sign.

It is a bit confusing. Is this possible 15k fine only dished out AFTER your 3rd warning, or is this a fine that can come out of nowhere at any time without warning?
