I wouldn't be too sure about that! The Search and Surveillance Bill currently going through parliament will allow Government agencies (such as the Pork Board, the Food Safety Authority or the Reserve Bank) to break in and install audio & video surveillance devices in private property for up to three days without a warrant!! This National Government has been systematically removing our rights and freedoms, trampling over our civil liberties, disregarding the recommendations of the Law Commission & dismissing the concerns of the Law Society, taking us down the road towards a fascist police-state. How on earth are they getting away with it? Goodbye democracy, hello tyranny!

Have you never seen on the back of CD's etc;

"unauthorised copying, reproduction, hiring, lending, public performance and broadcasting prohibited" as part of the copyright notice?

Procrastination eventually pays off.

I believe we saw this sort of law back in the early 1900's when the automobile was invented, and horse and cart manufacturers were worried that their business was in danger of becoming outdated. In that case I believe they had a law passed that in order to drive one of the new automobiles, you needed someone walking in front of it ringing a warning bell to warn people that this new dangerous machine was approaching. There are parallels with the media industry. They need to adapt and embrace to the new technologiies, rather than fight against them,

I remember at school, they used to hire videos from the local store, for students to watch enmass. That was probably prohibited too. But then again photocopying a page out of a book or magazine at the library is also probably prohibited.

Doesn't copyright expire after 50 years or something. I heard that one media company in another country recently had some laws changed to extend copyright to hundreds of years, after some of their valuable material was due to soon come out of copyright. They have some high up and powerful people.

I'm not sure of the actual length, but isn't that why they recently re-released the back catalogue of The Beatles and Elvis etc.

Life of the author + 50 years. The US is/has extended that to +70 years.

Totally agree there!

The media companies always love to push the line that Piracy = Lost Profit, where in reality as you say, often the piracy only happens out of opportunity, and a legal purchase by the person would not have happened anyway as they couldn't afford it.

Also many people forget that because someone downloaded something illegally it does not mean they won't ever buy it legally.

If someone downloads a movie and likes it chances are they will pick up the blu-ray version when it some out.

Or if they watch a tv show online they will buy the box set when that comes out.
