Go to settings>battery then tap on the battery graph. Is there a continuous bar under the "awake" category? I'm trying to determine how widespread this problem is and whether I'm wasting my time trying to beat it.
Post your battery graph screen grab for bonus points.

I have a 2012 Nexus 7 and it has over the last few months gone from lasting over a week on standby, to completely draining itself (ie to 0%) over the course of about two days if left untouched, even in flight mode.  (I don't use it much because Lollipop has rendered it mostly unusable except for e-books).  So, I think I'd say that this isn't sleeping properly.
Maybe it had nightmares about electronic sheep

No, far from being a solid bar on my S5.

Not sleeping can generally be tracked down to some badly behaved app.

I downloaded a battery saver app that has enabled me to identify apps that were constantly restarting in the background.

The two worst offenders were AirNZ (up to 90 starts per day) and a banking app (up to 50).

They were high up in the battery and data use lists too; especially considering that I use them infrequently and when I do use them it isn't for very long.

I have changed settings so that neither of these apps can auto-run and battery life has improved dramatically.

It seems everyone set the option to keep WiFi on all the time. Makes sense as mobile data costs a lot more...

My G4 doesn't have such a detailed usage graph, with LG clearly thinking they know better than stock Android - ie it doesn't plot specific components (wifi, screen etc) across time, only their cumulative totals as a percentage. Are there any easy ways to see such usage over time?

Which app did you use?

Cheers...
