dafman: The only negative I can think of is the 9mm thickness. Otherwise, looks great. Pity about Sense, but there always is the google now launcher. Definitely my pick over the S6, as has bigger battery and SD slot.

9mm isn't exactly BIG though...

Sense as an OEM UI "flavour" is pretty light compared to some others (I'm looking at YOU, Touchwiz!!) - as you say, you only need to run a different launcher (take your pick from the Play store) and it's as though Sense was never there. Can't say the same about the likes of Touchwiz, which futz with EVERYTHING POSSIBLE, so there will always be something remaining with them, even when running a different launcher...

Personally I think the One M9 is pretty disappointing... Design wise it pretty much looks exactly like the M8, only way to differentiate it is by the camera shape. And the Camera has no OIS...

Mmmm, so no sign of M9 Plus, a bit of a surprise with the HTC Vive VR though.

Maybe I'll stick with my M8 for a bit longer and see if M9 Plus will pop up.

You want decent photos, then you're going to need an ACTUAL camera, no matter what the features of the phone cam...

First off I have to lay my cards on the table and say I'm an unabashed HTC fan - I went from an inherited Desire to a new Sensation to the One M7. I didn't see the M8 as enough of an upgrade so stayed with the M7. Wit the M9, for me:

the better camera is a must - while I have a decent digital camera I don't carry it with me all the time, and if I see something I really want to get a shot of I am sometimes quite disappointed in the results from the M7. Personally I think the "ultrapixel" experiment was a failure.
expandable storage is a bonus - I carry a lot of music around with me so I could fill a decent microSD card. I know - I should use Spotify or something, but it's all data, right? Why chew through my precious Spark 1.25GB listening to music I already own?

These two things alone will probably be enough for me to upgrade from the M7 to the M9 when it's available, although Sense 7 might help with the decision as well - it's supposed to be smarter, more customisable - could be good, as I much prefer Sense to, say, TouchWiz anyway.

On a separate note (there's probably a fitness tracker forum) I was hoping for big things from the HTC/Under Armour collaboration and was holding off getting anything until this was announced, but am ultimately disappointed it doesn't have a heart rate monitor. I will go for the FitBit ChargeHR instead.

It's not ALL that people want, but the manufacturers have prioritized cameras in marketing and therefore people have come to rely on them. We use them with our kids because it's faster than a normal camera and we always have them with us.

Samsung's have great cameras, HTC's don't, perhaps until now.

You do not need a standalone camera for great photos, but you do if you want a particularly good one. Most people would be more than satisfied with the shots taken from a IP6 or Samsung Galaxy.

Its an interesting debate the quality of the ultrapixel camera, I still don't think the M7 has a bad camera, I seem to be able to get reasonably good pics form it most of the time, I'm hoping the 20MP M9 camera is better but doubt it will be night and day

I skipped the M8 as the M7 still does all i need, now that the M9 is out, I'm not sure it will be the likely successor for me, there just does not look to be enough innovation to warrant the cost of changeover

The S6 on the other hand looks to step the game up in a few more areas

My point is that it's a tradeoff - you want the quick and easy, then it's just not going to be all that flash. You want a PROPER camera, with OIS, and good low-light, and decent zoom, etc, then really, you're not in the market for a mobile phone are you?

I get the idea behind the phone camera, don't get me wrong. I too enjoy ther convenience of a camera on my phone. What I'm saying is that you can't expect to have all the latest whizz bang stuff you get from an ACTUAL camera in a mobile phone. You just can't. It's a phone first and foremost, so saying you don't want that phone because it doesnt come with OIS, or whatever else, is a bit silly.

FWIW, my fiancee and I both agree that my M7 takes better photos, with BOTH cameras, but the front one especially, than her Galaxy does.

Well ok, but other brands of camera phones have OIS etc, and you would be the first I've ever heard say that a HTC has better photo quality than a Galaxy, unless the galaxy has a fault. But it's good you like the camera on your HTC, at the end of the day it's what it's all about. I owned both and I went back to the S5 for the physical home button, and camera.

I like it, I will upgrade from the M7 and give the M7 to my wife as it will be an upgrade from her HTC Desire HD which was mine previously.

M9 is a good upgrade for M7. From the M8 perhaps not. But then again I will happily use a phone for a couple of years before upgrading. As long as it has the latest software, good hardware/design (M9 tick), and better battery life (M9 should tick) I am going to be happy.

No, the camera is not all I use my phone for, but OIS is a feature that is a must for me personally, especially for a 2015 flagship...

The thing is HTC have been pushing their 'experience' with the likes of Zoe for a while now. What they didn't have was a flagship phone with a camera to match. Now they do, as long as they sort out the software to run the camera. One report I saw commented on disappointing low light performance but it was running pre release software.

By the time it reaches our shores in April/May that should all be sorted out. The price will matter with the S6 in direct competition ($800 on special is my sweet spot). I hope the retailers here have more than the boring dark grey one but I'm not holding my breath.

No, the camera is not all I use my phone for, but OIS is a feature that is a must for me personally, especially for a 2015 flagship...

Hmmm...well 2013's newest phone camera gimmick doesn't appear in that many phones at the moment, so I'm not sure what your options are going to be like this year if that's what you really need in a phone...
