Why is this only affecting Australia? As far as I'm aware Apple issue the same software updates globally, so I would have thought that Samsung would do likewise?

I haven't owned an Android phone for more than a decade, but it used to be that different countries (and sometimes even different providers in the same country) had subtly different updates. It's also possible that Samsung decided to use Australia as a test bed for this particular update (which makes it even more outrageous that it was pushed out over the holiday).

Backups are worthless on android, just like the transfer to a new phone things because apps can decide to not let it happen. One of the most frustrating parts of android vs iphone where you can lose your phone, put in your icloud on a new one and it comes back almost exactly as the old one was if you were paying for icloud backups.

Suggesting that backups are a solution for this is absurd. Samsung have cocked this up and should be resolving this for people.

I'm a little torn on this. On the one hand Apple have it over Android in terms of replacing a device. Admittedly my work phone is very locked down, but when I get a new one, I type my iCloud details in, and ten minutes later, it's identical.

Android on my personal, I'm at the point where I'm kind of loath to change phones, and I have bought new phones and left them in the box for a few days until I can bring myself to set them up.

But on the other side, if these people lost their phones, they'd be in the same position. Photos, contacts all that stuff gone if they haven't backed it up.

Wow, I have no idea what you're all doing that makes the experience so bad.  I change Android handsets once or twice a year, it's seamless for me.  I wouldn't do it so often if it was an annoying or overly manual process.

That is official "Geekzone" level!!

It's little things like having all the icons in the right place, re-authenticating banking apps etc, which may not be unique to Android of course.

I'm with Mudguard on this one. Making sure Google Photos only auto-backs up specific folders, that the right accounts are set as defaults, making sure my own back ups separate to the sync to the cloud are operational, deleting / disabling all of the unwanted cruft / bloatware that the manufacturer loads & on & on ...

d3Xt3r: It's surprising to see so many people complain about lost contacts - on Samsung phones, you can sync your contacts to both Google and Samsung clouds. Even if you don't enable any of the Samsung cloud stuff, as soon as you sign in to your Google account when setting up your phone, your contacts are backed up by default -...

Sure, you can sign in to the Samsung Cloud stuff during initial set up. How many of the "normal" people make a note of that password so that they can re-enter it on the next phone? If you're not careful, some devices will save contacts to the device instead of any cloud service. Not 10 years ago, even in this day & age. It's all due to lazyness, bad defaults & other "not giving enough shit about it" stuff that contributes to this.

Man do I wish you can back up your iMessages separately! Why do I have to restore my whole phone just so that I can keep my message history? I've run into issues where my phone is more up to date than the out of the box iPhone & the migration failed because I am moving to an older iOS version.

Same for Apple that's why they provide the carrier settings update separate to the os update.
