Is it different to the Vodafone one?

I'm curious...as the firmware itself should be independent of the frequency capabilities of the chips if I understand it correctly. I may not. :-)

Just to be clear - the thread you link to above has a comment that flashing with Odin is quicker/better than the approach that is actually outlined in the thread.  The actual thread is primarily about using Nodial's approach to upgrading to a "telecomNZ" 2.2 Rom.  The link to this original thread is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835628.  Using Nodial's approach does not require flashing with Odin - but it does require you to get Samsung Kies working with your phone - that in itself can be a huge mission - one that I finally conquered!!!

I found out about this thanks to Muzzholt here on GZ; http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=71555&page_no=4 and also    http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?topicid=62267&forumid=97&page_no=157.

So, I followed instructions and have upgraded to 2.2 (FROYO.DOJP2) on my Telecom NZ Galaxy S. It worked fine for me (but given the vagaries of life, the universe and android I am in no way guaranteeing it is bulletproof!!)

As noted elsewhere, retains all the Telecom stuff - splash screens, APNs etc..  Obviously wipes all your added apps on the internal SD card so back them up if you don't want to go downloading them all again!!

One word of warning if you use it for business though.  As I noted in another thread, after the update, my syncing with MS Exchange stopped working.  After further research I have discovered that this is a major problem across a range of devices with certain 2.2 upgrades - Google are aware (there is much discussion and gnashing of teeth online - as there should be!!).  My issue is the "cannot connect to sever" error (there are slight variations on this depending on version of MS Exchange in use).  The immediate workaround   is to download "Touchdown" email, calendar etc.. client from the Market - this makes it work fine - it is the native android client that doesn't work with the upgrade.  I am currently using the 30 free trial of Touchdown to check it works fine - you do have to pay in the long run (which, philosophically is a pain, but it won't break the bank!).  If Google had any sense they would take a commission off NitroDesk (makers of Touchdown) for providing them with a ready-made market of potential users!!

Anyway, that summarises my experience to date.

Regarding the problem above to do with exchange on froyo. I had the same issue when I flashed this rom, I fixed it by connecting first time to sync my emails thru wifi. Now it snycs perfectly via data all the time.

Not sure why this worked but it has. Some one else give it a go and see.

So if this is the "official" update, why is it neccessary to use the registry patcher?

From what I've seen, the firmware will be different as it usually contains the full OS and band specific Modem (or Radio) updates also. Flashing the TNZ firmware on a Vodafone, will lose connection with the 3G 900 mhz towers.. but then you could flash a 900/2100 radio, then it starts to get interesting....

Thanks for the link, I did install on phone and PC but for some reason even though I followed the instructions to the letter the application just stayed in waiting to connect.
So I had to uninstall.

Cheers

Thanks for that suggestion.  Gave it a go a few minutes ago and it actually allowed me to connect to the Exchange server (a step further than previously!), so that was good.  Seemed to sync email fine as per previously (another step further!).  However, won't sync calendar (either way) - do you use calendar sync through MS Exchange, and did it work for you?  BTW, work is using Exchange 2007, as a matter of interest - seems there are sometimes different issues arising when exchange 2010 is involved.

Ultimately no good to me if I don't have calendar unfortunately.  Actually, the more I use Touchdown, the more I like it - neat and tidy with everything in the one app (including tasks).  Don't mind paying for a good piece of software.

The Kies software is notoriously famous for not recognizing phones and other sorts of issues. I have an AT&T Captivate and it doesnt recognize it at all. There's an update available (AT&T) but the software is crud in not recognizing my phone.

I received my XT Galaxy S today.

Spent almost three hours trying to connect it to Kies, and after numerous attempts at uninstalling, reinstalling, deleting drivers and editing the registry, I got it to recognise my device. Previously it just was stuck on "Connecting the device".

Used the Kies Registry Patcher v.1.6.0.0, I set it to TNZ as before this it would not detect that an update was available. Have now upgraded to 2.2.

However every time I connect to Kies now, it says I have a firmware update available. Meh I'll just ignore it.

Now to root/lagfix etc. Quite new to this so reading up on it a fair bit.

Loving the phone though :D

So Dick Smiths has 20% off "all" Samsung phones at the moment - this would make the galaxy $799 (open contract)

Most of the Samsung phones on their website show the discount but the galaxy doesnt

worth an enquiry?

I've upgraded my Telecom Galaxy to Froyo now, but had some issues doing it. I suspect the problem was that I was running Kies on a VM in VirtualBox, and it lost the connection to the phone just after it switched to download mode. Left me with a semi-bricked phone, but I was able to complete the upgrade using Odin. Phew.

One thing I'm not happy about though is that the App Market is now apparently set to a different region or something. A few of the apps I had previously (including a couple that I had paid for) can no longer be found from the phone but are still listed on AppBrain, and they are supposed to be for all versions of Android. I don't know what region it was before the upgrade, but it is now 53005. Is that what it should be? Has anyone else experienced this?

search market enabler on the geekzone forums, it is an app that changes the market region, also in the thread discussing market enabler someone has posted the region codes for NZ.
