ArtooDetoo: Musings on JPY

Battery life on JPY seems to be less than JPU, which was 24 hours+ consistently, often 30+. So something has changed, whether it's the wifi not sleeping as a result of noLed 'faking' screen-off or some other factor. Whichever, my SGS has depleted its battery by 25% in a mere 5 hours, without anything extreme in terms of my usage.

I'm going to make wifi turn off whenever I'm away from home/office to see if that helps, but I imagine some peeps here have had JPY experience and might chime in with some wisdom.

The only non-stock mod I have is the kernel which has CF 2e enabled. Other than that, it's vanilla.

I'm reluctant to abandon noLED as it's been a real killer app for me so finding another way to recover my lost battery life would be preferable. Strangely though, noLED was enabled under JPU yet the battery duration was seemingly unaffected, so I'm thinking that it's some other factor at play.

Any suggestions for resolving the issue gratefully received.

Ignore it. I have found that it takes a few days on average for a new rom to 'bed in' to the hardware and during that time battery life is best ignored. You can try re-setting battery stats etc, but it often does not solve the entire problem.

See what you think of the battery after you have used the new rom for a week.

I may have inadvertantly stuffed up on my flash by failing to fully charge the battery prior to doing it. Not sure whether or not Android expects the battery to be at 100% in actuality before resetting the battery stats file, and assumes that whatever level of charge it actually has equals 100% even though it might be much less.

Which would mean that the OS would chuck the charging circuit into idle when it reached the figure it erroneously believed to be 100% although it might well have been less. If that makes sense.

So having done that, you'd potentially (see what I did there?) have to use a dumb charger to force-fill the battery before you could get it to accurately recalibrate. Or not. *Sigh* I really don't have a clue, as I'm sure you can tell. In the absence of a dumb charger, your only option (and mine) is to fully charge the battery whilst the SGS is switched off. Otherwise, the battery stats file would limit the charge to whatever the stats file said it was, true or not.

So logic dictates that those folk who think that a full charge requires the phone to be switched off, are most probably correct. (Or possibly not).

Oh well... it'll teach me for ignoring the details when I flash stuff I guess.

Thanks for he tip, but I don't think that would be wise until I've charged the battery to full, run it down completely, then recharged it again. And I'll need to do that for my spare as well, just to be safe as unless there are 2 copies of the stats file or the file can distinguish between two different batteries, the differences between the batteries must surely get the battery stats quickly out of sync. Best I make sure they both have the same range before I start swapping them. (0-100 instead of 11-79 or whatever).

It's also a good argument for making your spare the same battery as your original. :)

I can then wipe the stats file if needs be, but somehow, I doubt I'll need to do that once the recalibration is done as 0% and 100% should reflect the true state of the battery. Can't hurt to do a belt and braces though, huh?

Here's a suggestion
Once your phone is charged right up to 100% while it's off you can pull the plug and quickly put it back in, then you'll notice that it'll charge for a little longer, if you keep doing this until the phone only takes a very short amount of time to get back to 100% it will help get your phone right up to 100% like it should be. Found this out off a tutorial and I think it does work quite good.

Ended up buying titanium pro and adw ex yesterday. So worth it, having to manually restore apps is a pain and EX is way faster than the free version.

Thx for the suggestion. However, being the galactically impatient being that I am, I have already begun the discharge process with wifi, GPS, Bluetooth, Navigon, Maps and sundry other processes grinding away. Not sure what else to run although I'm seriously considering looping a video while playing everything from my music folder. However, Android's clever multi-tasking juju will no doubt park most of those processes except music and networking. Poo.

Any suggestions about spectacular battery-eating apps that won't demolish my ADSL data cap will be welcomed. :D

The prognosis based on current consumption suggests about 5 hours will slaughter the battery. Too slow!!! Must. drain. battery. FASTER.

I was kinda hoping I could let something run while I was doing some useful work, but thanks for the tip.

I have discovered that the stock SGS media player can't loop. That is spectacularly lame. Must look into a 3rd party app from the Market. Any suggestions?

Hi all

Have been lurking in this forum for a while (since August) - bought my SGS in November. Has been very informative, so thanks to everyone for their assistance.

Have a question, have searched high and low, and can't find the answer I am looking for.

Last week got the cajones to flash Darky's ROM, using his installation guide for first time users - worked a treat. However, I thought as part of this process I would have been given root access, i.e. installed update.zip file then flashed Darky's v8.1.

Then while installing titanium back up, I get an error which says it could not acquire root access.

I have the Superuser app, but no root access ?

Is this possible ? or have I lost root access somewhere along the way since flashing ?

Thanks for your help.

it should be rooted, you could try running z4root application to re-root the phone.

Yer just re-root through cwm (your recovery). It's in there somewhere
