Being in a similar situation (8yo, currently has gen4 ipod and time to move toward a phone, iphone out of price range and most entry level phones grossly inferior to the ipod in many ways, ipod has battery issues so dual devices not an option) I am heavily leaning toward the 520, WP8 is far more child friendly than android, tbh its probably more child friendly than ios.
That said I decided against buying one for xmas present when i heard there was a 525 in the wings, I'll wait and hope the 520 will be cleared out for a good price and pick one up then
Personally I would go with the Nokia Lumia 520, currently $177 at The Warehouse. Easy to use, and has heaps of apps that would keep a 10 year old happy.
a windows phone might be OK for an eight or ten year old but any older than that I wouldn't consider it as peer pressure will be kicking in around 11 or 12 years old and the kids wont want to be the odd one out.

Really though, it is a phone, it sends and receives messages, takes and makes calls, has a camera, has heaps of games, has Facebook etc. The smart kid won't succumb to peer pressure. If i was 10, 11, 12, 13, etc, and someone gave me a Nokia 520, I would be stoked.
Unfortunately by the time she gets to 15 the peer pressure will demand an iPhone as" That's what all the other girls have" This happened to one of the guys at work with his 15 year old but being an iFan family he went and bought her a new iPhone 4S..
