Of those two, I'd get the IDEOS. Also in the price range are the LG Optimus GT540 and the SE Xperia Mini

But the IDEOS comes with Android v2.2, which is a big plus for performance, provided the phone has enough RAM to support JIT. The IDEOS should, with 256Mb. Just. Top line phones have 512MB. HTC Magic 32b has 192MB...and JIT is pretty bad. Just not enough RAM in 192MB.

ASIDE: None of the <$400 phones can do Adobe Flash. They are all ARMv6-based (the processor)...and the processor in the phone has to be ARMv7 to support Flash on the phone (or other device). Android v2.2 is also required for Flash - so ARMv7 + Android v2.2 = Flash works pretty well on the phone.

I was thinking about the Ideos but the HTC Wildfire is $450 from Clove so am thinking that would be a better bet with better processor and memory, anyone got any opinions? It's getting so confusing!

Yes look at Pricespy - there's the Galaxy Spica for ~$400 that has HVGA Screen and 800mhz processor

Yes but there doesn't appear to be any chance of that getting Froyo from what I have read so it's kind of dead in the water

What reason do you have to get Froyo with an ARMv6 processor anyway? you can't even get flash. oh and if you did have to have Froyo (despite there not being a whole lot of reason to) you could get an HTC Magic and load CyanogenMod onto it.

As someone who has very much been left behind by the smartphone revolution (got a Razr v3X), I find this phone very attractive. I currently am aiming for a Samsung Galaxy S I9000 or iPhone (still can't help feeling this is the cream of the current smartphone market; but am willing to get an Android device as my wife already has an iPhone), but the reality of the situation is that I would not be in a position to get one of those babies until mid next year (and only then if the taxman is good to me).

Considering I'm a low usage phone user, who primarily TXTs (and hates it on his Razr), how good are these phones? Are they good enough that I wouldn't suffer the expected phone envy everytime I see a Galaxy or iPhone (which is a daily occurance :-(), or is really not worth it and I should stick to when I can afford a higher end model? One thing that is firmly in the back of my mind is how awesome the iPhone 4 is for taking concert footage (see here for stuff I took from my wifes phone), and I know these ones won't be able to compete there. Are there other such areas that I'll be constantly thinking "if only"?

I didn't realise the Wildfire had that one, see what I mean about confusing ;)

Wildfire uses the Qualcom MSM 7225 the same as the Ideos (Huawei 8150) and Vodafone 845 (Huawei 8120). They all have QVGA screens. The screen on the Vodafone 845 is quite lacking in detail and contrast compared to the Galaxy S. it's quite a different experience.

I would not recommend getting a phone with less than HVGA (320x480) resolution if you want to do any sort of web browsing or multimedia. The Galaxy S screen is ideal for multimedia. If you aren't too fussed about OS and still want a smartphone there's always the Samsung S8500 Wave that runs Bada OS - it has a 3.3" WVGA SAMOLED screen and basically the same other specs as the i9000.

However this cheap phone can do far more customisation than your wife's iphone4.

However it would never match up to it because the hardware is way inferior to the iphone

Yes, you can do things like GPS, wifi and the lot, however when compared to the iphone it would feel laggy. Also no multitouch on this phone.

I have not tested video yet, but some of the games are extremely slow on this.

The SGS outmatches the iphone4 in many ways except maybe for taking pictures and lack of flash

However I think if you wait, you should keep a eye out for the Vodafone 945

This I believe would square up to the Iphone quite well, as I think this would fall in the middle of a SGS and V845, with some really good features.

This might sell for around $500-$600, so a excellent value for money.

Yeah, I reckon I know this to be true, but my desire to upgrade my old dinosaur is clouding my judgement and allowing me to be tempted by lesser offerings :-)

The lack of flash doesn't worry me too much, nor does the picture quality (although from what I understand it can actually be better than the iPhone, depending on what you're looking for). The thing that concerns me the most is the phones build quality. The iPhone feels like a quality piece of kit when you hold it, whereas the Galaxy S appears very cheap and plasticky in comparison. Is this really a problem, or once it is cased up is it something you don't really notice?

I have also heard reports of the Samsung Android phones suffering from lag once you start running a few apps on 'em. Is this really an issue, or a storm in a teacup?

Hmm, I'm pretty tempted by the $175 pricetag, but the screen is too average for me. I checked out the IDEOS, icons and text looked a bit blurry, and it was sluggish. I like the Samsung Galaxy 580 but it's quite a bit more expensive and seems like a few online places are selling i5801 (Apollo?) quoting i5800 specs, hard to know what you would get.
Might go play with a VF845 again
