So I cant order from US amazon vs au amazon?

No deal on locally right now.

You can order from wherever you want that will ship it to you. Some phones can be shipped to NZ, some can't. Amazon US have the Pixel 8 for US$549 + GST with free shipping.  Amazon AU have a UK import for AU$1,124 free shipping. Either should be ok I would guess.

yeh thats about the standard NZ shop price once converted. Uggggh not jumping on Mobile Station 8 at $830.

The nothing 2a has no macro vs the the 2, which used the imx890 which could go into macro and 2x zoom, now the Samsung 50mp sensor cant do that. I take a lot of macro shots as weird as that sounds haha.

I thought I could wait but my 7yr old galaxy screen has died. So great I have no phone.

Just be aware that not all Pixel 8's are the same.   Especially with some of the cheap priced ones they are sometimes carrier/network locked.  Also, apparently the Japanese versions have a forced shutter sound when taking a photograph - which may or may not be important to you. The pixel 8 for US$549 I found - probably the same one as @timmmay looks OK though - but its the 128gb model.  It may be worth paying the extra or a 256gb model if you are looking at keeping it for 6+years?

JB won't ship to NZ, a reshipper like AUSFF is required.

amazon have a $428 model. in my head I had USD conversion at 2x but no it works out to circa $700. Which is free delivery AND carrier free, could be a good buy. no taxes etc.

BUT its a refurbished model so wont ship to here.

8 standard, unlocked, new, on special $895 delivered. Not quite $839 but I missed that deal, shoulda jumped it.

Pixel 8 pro wont quite fit under $1k, $1090

I would prefer the bigger screen of the pro however.

Another possible option - A company called "Green Gadgets" does refurbished and second hand phones.  They seem to be a pretty big company in Aussie, and sell some stuff through Trademe.  They are selling a Google Pixel  8 - 128 gig model for $949 + $10 shipping on Trademe. (Listing /4760048077)   They also have a refurbished 256 gig Google Pro for $1260 which I think is worth th extra money (listing 4762171595 if you care)

I purchased my Pixel 8 Pro from them, and it was a mixed bag.  Delivery was fast, and my refurbished phone was visually in perfect condition and worked as intended.   They also offer (and seem to stand by) a 30 day "return for any reason" warranty - and offer as 12 month warranty.  As you can pay by Ping, you have double comeback from Trademe.  On the flipside, my phone came fully discharged, and they would not do a forward replacement even if I offered for them to hold the money on my credit card, and that seemed illogical as I realize I could have purchased another one from Trademe, then told them I was unhappy with the first.  They also have a strange idea that 80% of original battery life would be considered "new".  (As it happened I discovered my battery life was fine with Accubattery giving me estimates similar to new, and some software I found on the Play Store showed it had the equivalent of 96 charge cycles, so I didn't return it).  Although they claim to be based in Auckland [and I think return shipping would be to Auckland], the company is actually Australian, and I don't think they have a physical presence here.

Was informed that the Japan thing is a geolocation thing. Possible to turn off once GPS detects you're outside, or will be forced on when in Japan. Not 100% sure as have not been nor have bought a Japanese phone...

Why is the 8 only $889 delivered to NZD from amazon US? It feels like NZ gets really shafted for electronics.

I like the idea of the Iphone storing the ai data to the onboard SOC so no personal data is sent? But data has been sent for decades so why now is security such a concern, ai will only use the data you send and most apps for banking etc are encrypted? But the Iphone 13 is in my list, should still get 3 years support, maybe the 14.

Then Im looking at the s24fe and wondering will it also include 7 years support like the S24 etc recieved?

Im essentially trying to buy a phone thats going to be supported for 3-4 year minimum for less than $1k ideally with a decent camera and ideally with a big screen ie 6.4"+.

Thats why I wonder if the Pixel 8 Pro for $900 delivered could be the one for me, just the apple storage of ai data to SoC does seem a good feature.

Of the Pixel 8 colours, I like the blue the most, I think its called "Bay"...... but not available on current pricing.

A Pixel 8 Pro for $900 delivered seems like an unbelievably good deal - as in it sounds either hot or network locked.    Cheapest I could find on EBay was US$609 for an open Box model  + Shipping - which worked out to $994.67 + $69.78 shipping + GST = NZ$1224.12 all up (for a 128 gig model).   I did find cheaper ones, but in the fineprint it says they will work only with Verizon or only with Spectrum.

I'm mighty curious to find out where you are looking at that price!     (rereading your post, did you mean Pixel 8, not 8 pro?)

apologies, yes Pixl 8, not the pro. 23% off at amazon. 2 week delivery though. I should have jumped on the mobile station for $830.

the Samsung a55 is a strong phone for $600, samoled hdr 6.6" screen, solid main camera, 3yrs support as of March, I think its 4 major updates.

Expert Infortech (info.co.nz) have that same phone for $1011 inc GST (https://www.einfo.co.nz/google-pixel-8-128gb-5g-8gb-obsidian.htm) - with free pickup from their store in Glenfield (and postage between $6.99 and $13.99 depending on where you live) - Why not buy local with a warranty?   I've bought phones from them, and I've been happy - but fair warning - not all of the phones they have are actually in stock - it can sometimes take a few days - so ring them first.

They also have the Pixel 8a (https://www.einfo.co.nz/google-pixel-8a-128gb-5g-8gb-aloe.html) for $925 inc GST.

so items are not GST exempt, just import fee exempt? If so I dont see why worrying about being under $1k is that beneficial, if it saves more than the import fee/stamp duty?

its a real shame the pixel 7 only gets 3 years updates, its google for cripes sake. its a real competitor to the Iphone 14 Pro, but much better value.

I believe that only the Iphone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max have on-device AI processing (Apple Intelligence). They each have 8GB RAM, which appears to be the minimum requirement.

The Iphone 13 (4GB RAM) and 13 Pro (6GB RAM) you mentioned will not have on-device AI nor Apple Intelligence.

Edited: to correct only 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max have generative AI or "Apple Intelligence"
