BTW, if anyone else is interested in the skin sets for the Galaxy i9000, Andrew will do them for $16.  He also has skins for the Galaxy Tab for $32.  If people are interested they can email Andrew on nzgroovejet an gmail dot com.  And no, I'm not getting paid anything to pass on this information.

I'm still waiting for R2D2's dollar for being a beta tester, what more do I need :-D

A whole dollar? What... are you the world beta-tester champion or something? And you don't get any 'reward' until the NDA is signed, young lady.

Why don't you just buy them direct US$8.99?

Buy Extended Controls from the market - it's bloody handy.

Wifi weirdosity...

Righto then, the wifi issue appears to be that the WiFi Policy setting magically reset itself to "turn off = never" in the advanced settings. Odd, but maybe as a result of my factory reset. So now the policy is reset again to turn off wifi when the screen sleeps. And I think that'll improve things.

But... (there's always a but...) my testing suggests that the wifi in JPY draws more power than the JPU version, possibly 3 or more times as much, so I will be doing a google for some way to revert the wifi driver to the JPU version, and I'll post an update for those who are interested (and at the moment, it seems to be only me, but it could conceivably help somebody else down the track).

To be a Galaxy owner, you need to be part sleuth, I think. Laughing

Cheers,

Hardcore released a CWM flashable wifi modem from DXJPA a while back that solves any power drain issues with the modem in JPY

Yes, the general consensus on XDA is that the later modems draw more power to boost the 3G reception.  Great if you live in the wops, but probably not necessary in cities.  I've certainly noticed that my wifi range is much better on JPY than it was on stock Froyo, or JPP.

Cool. So there was an issue... I'll have a search for that flashable wifi update.

(Cover your eyes lokhor) - My battery has been off charge for 12 hours now and the charge meter indicates 78% to go which is looking a lot healthier. Won't know until I've run it flat but I'm thinking somewhere around 30 hours. I can live with that. I'm confident that the flash I did with the battery only partially charged was a factor in the rotten results I was getting, but there appears to have been an element of 'perfect storm' with some other factors also contributing.

Hopefully my next post on the topic will be all good news. :)

And thanks for the tip about JPA's wifi.

Cheers,
R2D2

Bought mine yesterday, received it today.  While I have bought plenty of things off shore, you can't beat getting your goods the next day :)

Thanks for the confirmation. Did you also experience an increased battery drain when you went to JPY 2.2.1?

TIA,

lokhor: @ArtooDetoo try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885903

G'day lokhor...

Thanks for the link and I've downloaded the driver patch zip file.

I've discovered an interesting thing about my CWM 3BR (2e) boot menu - it doesn't have the following option...
install apply zip from sd card
It allows you to run update.zip, but the option above is missing. :(

Any idea how I can remedy that without flashing a modded rom? Or am I going to have to ditch the vanilla ROM and use a Doc/Darkyy special?

Ta in advance.

Cheers,
R2D2

Hard to say unequivocally old chap -  when I upgrade a ROM I tend to go the whole hog and do the kernel and modem too. . . .so while the drain with JPY was probably higher for the reason mentioned above, I'd say the battery life is actually better now, so the loss has been offset by gains in the kernel and ROM itself. To be fair though, I always switch 3G off when I'm not using the phone, and wifi reconnects in about 2 seconds from lock.

Phone off charge yesterday morning, and it's currently showing 77% - not bad for 30-odd hours!! Cool
