Nothing was changed to resolve the problem. Battery capacity has not changed, they are using one of their manufacturer suppliers as the exclusive supplier that had no battery issues. The supplier that had the issue will isolate the process defect and rectify it following the specs provided to them.

I had read that the battery supplier that they are using for the 'new' devices is in fact the same company that makes the iPhone batteries. If so, smart move on their part. If the 'new' battery develops a fault the brown stuff may well stick to Apple as well by association!

Correct, the old batteries were from a samsung company.  Don't know who are supplying the new ones however

Same company as iPhone batteries, in China.

Which is why the Chinese market Notes were deemed 'safe' - their batteries did not come from the Samsung factory.

As I understand it, the problem was solder accidentally crossing the positive and negative terminals on the circuit boards of a very small number of devices. I read Samsung are going to X-Ray all devices before they are deployed.

I'd imagine x-raying existing devices will show the defect very easily and means they can deploy the old unaffected units that they recalled and still make a partial financial recovery.

So I have my brand new gold platinum Note 7 here, unopened. I am still trying to determine how I can end up with a Black Note 7.

Anyone got a replacement in black that would be willing to swap with potentially a swap incentive, financial or otherwise thrown in ?

Part of the exchange, or did you buy outright?

Sorry it's my exchanged one.

I'm also keen if anyone has their gear VR they want to offload.

My replacement just arrived via courier. Interestingly it had a prepaid postage envelope in it marked 'note 7 recall'. I didn't think they would be sending them out without receiving the bad one first.

After much consideration, I decided I will take a risk and grab one from Hong Kong - seems the battery issue wasn't as much of a problem there as their launch came later. Looks like I can get one for about $1k NZD, which is a pretty good price compared to NZ retailers.

With a starting price of NZ$1600: including the recall arrangements, via Vodafone I got

- $300 off to start with (the 'launch offer')
- 128GB memory card included by Samsung - $100?
- free Galaxy J5 which I sold unopened/new on Trademe for $289

So my fresh Note 7 effectively cost me a bit over $900.

And today I have just sold my old HTC One M7 (which the Note 7 replaces) for $150.

Total net cost of N7 was less than $800.

So the overall result of persevering through the recall was pretty much worthwhile.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
