Apparently Nokia's update delivery infrastructure is gutless and that's why many users get ridiculously late updates (they have to dribble them out). Neither of my phones has received the Android 8 final, though it was released on he 31st of January. One of them is on the Oreo Beta (why the hell didn't they prioritize beta testers for the stable release?) with 5th December 2017 security patch and the other is on Nougat with the 1st January 2018 security patch. Another reason why I hate these phones.

If anyone wants to buy a barely used Nokia 6, let me know. I think it's time I got rid of at least one of these. Full disclosure: worst phone I've ever owned.

You can install updates manually through recovery. There are direct download links to Google's OTA servers on XDA.

Yes, but that's a bit of a faff. Why don't they just give it to users who manually trigger the update check like Apple does?

Also, I thought I read somewhere about automatic updates potentially breaking after updating that way.

Interesting you've found the 6 so bad - it's one of the phones I've shortlisted to replace my Experia M4 in a few months, but only based on specs so far.  The other one I like the look of is the Moto G5S Plus.  I'm already erring towards the G5S because of its splashproofness and because it's newer.

What don't you like about the 6, other than slow updates?

Automatic updates may break if you get an update not intended for your region/carrier. But you can "break" automatic updates this way if you travel somewhere and put in a local carrier SIM. Before Oreo release it was about 5 different branches, now it's 3 - worldwide, amazon-locked, and one more starting on 00S0 (may be something as locked as amazon). You can install 00WW_5_22A manually it includes full firmware & Feb security patch, and it does not have any build pre-conditions so can be installed on top of any version.

Updates aren't slow. Their delivery is slightly inconsistent and some users get out of updates loop and stuck at certain patch level. Unfortunately there is no official DIY way to install updates.

Nokia 6(2017) runs on Snapdragon 430, not suitable for gamers and power users. HMD already released Nokia 6 (2018) for Chinese market, I bet it will be available worldwide in mid of 2018. It has better specs for the same price.

The main problem is that notifications are unreliable. Maybe this has been fixed in Oreo stable, but it looks like hell will freeze over before I get that on either phone so I wouldn't know. The notification issue is very inconsistent/intermittent.

I've had three units total, one returned. I should have returned another one, but I left it too long. Two out of three had USB ports that were slightly misaligned. Not the end of the world if you're careful how you insert the plug, but crappy QC nonetheless.

The finish on one unit was scuffed in multiple areas along one edge. More evidence of poor QC.

All three units had appalling audio ports. They feel very rough on insertion, and some plugs (like Apple's plugs) will catch on removal. The ports scratch up the ends of plugs that are inserted into them, clearly a very cheap and poorly designed part they used here.

One unit has 10+ pixel defects. Granted, the average person probably wouldn't notice and even I have difficulty seeing them sometimes, but again that's terrible QC and I should have returned it on principle.

Multiple niggling bugs, like scrolling in Chrome being broken since an update last year. Still isn't fixed in the Oreo beta, so I doubt it ever will be.

Nokia support is beyond useless and dismissive of feedback.

Speaker is poor, distorts notification sounds (all three units).

But yeah, the unreliable notifications/alarms is what makes the phone unusable for me. A lot of people claiming that this or that fixes it online, but nothing worked.

As qwerty123 said, Nokia have released a new Nokia 6, so the old one will probably be even more neglected now.

Daughter's Nokia 8 Android 8 (and now 8.1) never had notifications problems.

My Huawei devices on the other hand were attrocious. Bluetooth problems, notification problems, power management problems. The best I got from Huawei was "Oh, yes will work on these" but never happened.

At the end for myself I bought a OnePlus 5T and it's great. I'd go with the Nokia 8 but didn't want a device with the metal backing because of NFC - but the new Nokia 8 Sirocco announced today is not bad looking - pretty much 95% glass.

Is that the one that needs to be returned to vendor to get a fix for hd video streaming?

Ah, I thought you were on topic - Nokia, not OnePlus.Never mind, currently download Netflix to this phone and works fine - perhaps because it's a download and I never download HD...

freitasm: You can now buy unlocked Nokia in New Zealand with local updates so it has to be a lot cheaper to justify buying from Amazon.

Hello.  May I ask, would the "Spark Nokia 8" available at Harvey Norman (on special this weekend) be unlocked?  I have had a good look but could not find a definitive answer to this.  If not can you advise where you saw unlocked Nokia 8's?

I am finally giving up on my Lumia 735 which has been great but now that Win 10 mobile is starting to degrade.  I nearly ordered a parrallel import but could do without the compromises.

Thanks for any help.

Yes, it is unlocked - as are all current NZ-new Nokia devices with the exception of the 3310 featurephone.
