I can't find anywhere that says it has Oreo available. Though as its wrapped in FlymeOS it seems pretty hard to work out what version of Android is included in that.

No - Haven't bought anything yet.

Those sites all seem to be re-printing a similar article. Its certainly not Oreo from Meizu - So its nothing 'official' - I am not convinced they are kosher.

I wouldnt want to buy a new phone and start hacking it straight away anyway - Would be good to at least know there was some sort of official upgrade path for a while (Oreo at least). Guess there is no way to know....

NikT might give you some advice on the Meizu as he is the brand manager for PBtech.

There arent a lot listed on the upgrade path for Meizu but the M6 Note is on it, sorry my understanding was it is already out.

To be fair a lot of really big name phones still wont be getting Oreo for some time. Updates are never a given, but good companies will give at least 1 and usually 2 Android updates along with patches.

Which is why I would wait for the Nokias.

They are on the Android One platform. Which means I think 3 (at least 2, I forget) major updates, and given they have already Oreo, that will be until A10/11 and immediate Android patches.

The 7 has been released, and its a beast of a phone, SD660, so sits between say the Moto/Meizu platform and the Galaxy S8 platform, but is new architecture, its the most powerful yet leaning towards battery optimisation SOC from qualcomm. The phone is a 6" IPS 18:9. It has next to no bezels. The on screen home, back etc keys can be removed and screen gestures of your choice used to replace them. Now whats important is it has a 3800mah battery, you combine that with essentially a 1080p IPS panel and you have abundance of battery life, similar to the Meizu m6 note but I suspect much better due to the new SOC. I expect good reviews soon.

Then you have the Nokia 6, which has the new s630 which replaces the Meizus sd625, its also had zeiss work on the sensor and has their branded lenses (but I wouldnt expect miracles, just better than last years 6), 4GB ram, and again launches with Oreo and is on Android One platform. And from my calculations should be $500nzd ~.

And top it off, these 2 phones are the hottest looking phones Ive ever seen. Carved from aluminimum block, then polycarbonated backs with gorilla class fronts and copper side trim, buttons and lens trims, in white or black.

Some more MWC content.

To be honest, Im kind of off the Sirocco now. Even though the Alu frame adds a grip, it still looks like 2 curved screens sandwiched together which is just terrible design, the Galaxy is worse with no grip and the amount of used Galaxies with smashed gorlla glass proves how much of an Apple like move that was.

I know the 660 soc isnt as powerful as the Sirocco, and the 7Plus is pretty weak in ppi ad is IPS not OLED, but it just looks how a phone should, curved back that is a one piece aluminum covered with poly carbonate for colour and texture (white or black), 3800mah battery, its just going to be a nice all day runner. I dont think its HDR compliant (I dont see how it could be due to specs), but 1080p is still plenty sharp for netflix. Along with being Android one. I think it will be a race between the 6 for value for money and the 7 for battery life and big screen (even if its a bit low ppi for 6"). Both look hot.

The Sirocco, I dunno, reminds me of the galaxy just too much. Im considering a note 8 and it annoys me the curved edges so much Im considering a used Note 5. I really enjoy the pen as it acts like a mouse and you can do so much more with the pen software than most mobiles, its more like a pocket pc.

Had some movement with my update situation.

As I said a few days back, I had two Nokia 6 units horribly out of date:

- Unit 1 (no SIM): Oreo Beta with 5th December 2017 security patch.

- Unit 2 (Vodafone SIM): Nougat with 1st January 2018 security patch.

Two days ago I checked for an update on both of them: nothing, as usual. I did some Googling, and noticed a thread where someone claimed that changing the sim allowed their phone to find an overdue update "within 30 seconds". https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74427334&postcount=17

I thought "what the hell" and swapped out the Vodafone SIM in my second unit for the Spark SIM it came with. Still no update that day or the day after. However, today the phone, still with the Spark SIM in it, received Oreo+patch 2018/02.

Now, I've found a post written by myself stating that one of my units received the 2017/11 while it had the Vodafone SIM in it, but nonetheless my confidence that update delivery is not affected by service provider is again shaken. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but that update was pretty damned late. My SIMless Unit 2 is even more out of date patch-wise, but it already has Oreo. Should I put the Spark SIM in it now and see what happens, or shall I wait for another month just to make absolutely sure no confirmation bias inducing update is coming in the next couple of days, before putting the SIM in (at which point, if the update arrives within a few days I will conclude that the service provider does influence update delivery)?

EDIT: I was writing this while the Oreo+patch 2018/02 update was installing on Unit 2, and now that it's completed, patch 2018/03 has immediately become available on that phone

I bought a Nokia 2 for $169 at the Warehouse in Whakatane.

It has 8GB of internal storage, but I added a 64GB microsd and it offered to incorporate that into the internal storage....so now the phone has 72GB of app / data storage.

The performance and features are on a par with high-end smartphones of 5-6 years ago......and if that's all you need, this is an awesome phone for the money.

I also seems to be very generic Android. Closest thing to it is one of my Nexus phones. I like that.

It has Android 7.1.1.

I'm impressed. It's pretty good for the money.

BTW, inertial scrolling is still screwed up in Chrome with the latest Nokia 6 and Chrome updates.

My daughter's Nokia 8 has been running with a Vodafone SIM since day one and receives regular updates.

Your situation not to sound dramatic, is quite bizarre. If it was locked to those carriers its a possibility. Definitely in the USA it is. One reason why buying a Sammy Note 5 you need to be careful as not all carriers will be rolling out Oreo.

But I didnt think the carriers had control over the software in NZ, I thought it came directly from the Manu?

One more reason to buy one of the 2018 Nokias on the Android One programme, or one of the cheaper phones as that was part of why they created Android One, to give everybody (looking at 3rd/2nd world countries, access to a smartphone (ie cheap ones), with immediate and fluent updates.

Some of the phones you wont have heard of. The Xiaomi Mi A1 is quite well thought of. Its $380 or cheaper if you import yourself.

The Nokias, well the 6 which I think will be the go to phone, going on AU pricing should be $500nzd~, the 7 which is the darling of the crop imo for so many reasons Im expecting about $7-800 and the Sirocco (Nokia 8) probably $900ish.

The general consensus is Nokia within a very short space of time are making their way back to the top of pile.

With Android One, because OEMs like Nokia dont have to worry about creating UI, they can concentrate on the hardware and the price.

The fact these phones CNC'd from a solid block of Aluminium is testament to that, I expect the Nokia 6 to be a tough little bugga, just like my 6020 thats 12 years old and going strong and my 600 win10 phone thats 5 years old and going strong. Plus they are easily the best looking phones on the market the 6 and 7.

If the Nokia 6 was out right now Id be buying one without thinking about it as I need a phone quick and Ive been tossing up the Moto G5s Plus vs the Meizu M6 Note, both which are great, but once you have seen the 6 or 7 on videos its hard to ignore their design. Also the 6 has the new SD630 SOC, Im not sure how much difference that makes over SD625.....

Originally I wanted the Sirocco 8, NikT made a few comments, which whilst I dont agree with on th Sirocco, I do agree about with the 7. 3800mah on essentially a 6" 1080p (18:9) screen with the brand new SD660 SOC = battery life and performance.

The Sirocco 8 even though its tough, looks too much like the Galaxy S8 for me now. Im really over the curved edges and if you look at phones on trademe every second S8 has cracks or complete carnage. Making a phone with curved edges front and back out of Glass really is not the smartest industrial design.

But what bothers me more is I find the edges mess with my viewing, however the S9 seems to have a faster taper which I like the look of side by side more so far.

I want a phone that has a high resolution (1440p), is OLED and HDR10 compliant, so its probably going to be a Note 8, even though I prefer the older Note 5 which you can get used with a new battery for about $400, compared to the parralel import price of $1200 for the Note8 (or $1600 if you are into paying retail for things).

Perhaps if unhappy with your last gen Nokias, wait for the releases (the 7 has been released overseas, the 6 soon) and sell for a small loss and get the update certainty of Android One platform.

For those that are having problems with updates, you could try a solution that has helped the Mi A1... Join the beta group for google play services!

The Mi A1, although being an Android One phone, gets updates a bit slower than one would expect and with the Oreo rollout things got weird (from keeping tabs on XDA threads). One of the ways to make sure you got the latest update when it was available was to clear the google services framework - this isn't recommended as it can break a few things (notifications / push stuff) for a few days - risky as it was, it worked a charm. Luckily, someone discovered the beta play services and from not seeing an update available, post becoming a tester, instant update available! I've seen this first hand with my wifes Mi A1.

Anyway, here's a link to join the beta https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.google.android.gms it might help those who are on old secuirty patches.

I won't be buying another Nokia phone for the reasons I've already covered in this thread (low quality ports, poor quality control, useless support). In fact, I won't be buying any more Android phones unless Google offers a way to stop doze from delaying notifications.

The only reason I still have these Nokia 6s is because they're no longer worth selling.

It was the original reason. But recently they added Android Go specifically for low end devices as well.

You could always give Sailfish OS a try. Regular updates with no operator interference.

For the time being you need to be prepared to flash your own phone for the initial install then it's just OTA updates. Has the ability to run most Android apps as well as a reasonable selection of native apps.

It's a very new OS, so some areas still need improvement. Right now it's not for everyone, but having said that it's a very viable option for a good number of people.

Well until MS Andromeda revolutionises mobile computing that leaves you the even intermittently worse quality control of Apple (at a much larger premium than a mid range nokia)

Ill have to go back and read why you are suggesting Windows is to blame for delaying notifications (what kind of notifications?).

Personally I have no expectation from lower end phones for updates and major installs, I run lineage across lower end models. But notifications are not updates or installs so I will have to read your issue first. I also dont expect a lot from Android in comparison to being like Windows10 prior to MS dying off the system for obvious reasons.

Always going to lose some customers on re entry to the market, whilst I cant comment on your spport issues, Id not have recommended the Nokia 6 first gen. A lot better Android phones for the same money.

Nokia has found a way to increase patch installaton, hence Android One.

So that or take a gamble with Apple and potentially be twice as unhappy.

Its a shame you have had such a bad experience when everyone seems so boyouant. If it SOOOO terrible, you probably should have demanded your cash back. If they are not fixing broken components then ask for the escalation process.

Good luck with your limited choices whatever you choose. Their are lemons in every product. Id advise next time do a lot of research and return the item as not fit for purpose which is how bad you make the nokia sound, within the allowed time.

Not sure where you got the idea I was talking about Windows. I said Doze, as in the Android feature that progressively cripples an idling phone in order reduce battery usage.

The only apps that can notify reliably are those that have implemented GCM service support. This is a non-starter for me, and makes Apple my default choice. Had I been aware of that behavior before I purchased the Nokia 6s, I would never have purchased them.
