Purchase a Galaxy S i9000 through eking.co.nz, supposedly an asia pacific model from Korea via Hong Kong. Had terrible reception on Vodafone, lost signal constantly and only when near a cell site did we get any decent reception.

Returned the unit, guy though it was an antennae problem and replaced it with a T-Mobile Vibrant, which had great reception, but lacked the front facing camera. Have returned that to and am waiting for either the unit to be repaired or a replacement unit sent out.

Just curious though, the stock Galaxy S had options to disable GSM or WCDMA, but the Vibrant had options to use 2G only. The frequencies/protocols on the Galaxy supposedly match Vodafone fine.

Is there a potential compatibility issue with the version I'm getting? Anyone else get a similar unit and have great reception?

Froyo on the Galaxy S allows you to choose Auto, GSM (2G) only or WCDMA (UMTS/3G) only. Don't think this was the case with the stock Eclair FW the unit came with for me.

Be wary of the Vibrant (T-Mobile) as it uses 1700 UMTS instead of 900MHz.

i had a vibrant, great reception, though the i9000 is great as well on occassion i do get the odd text msg that fails to send even though I have reception and have 2 delete it and recreate the msg and send 4 it to work.

Thanks for the info folks, and that's very good to hear n4. Will wait for my replacement and hope for the best :).

Instead of recreating the txt message, just hold your finger down on the message and a menu will prompt you to resend.

Yeah nah that doesn't work just keeps failing, hence the reason I have to delete it and recreate the msg then it goes through fine.

I have found that sometimes the phone refuses to send text messages when I'm connected to 3G. Then as soon as I switch to 2G only it sends messages fine. Weird huh?

I have quite a high rate of failed messages, I thought it was just because I'm on 2Degrees though.

? What sort of failure? Sending or receiving? 2G or 3G?

Failure sending. I just resend and it's ok. 3g I guess.

Hey has anyone worked out how to set Slide screen 4 on the home screen 2 be the default screen so that its quicker and easier scrolling a few screens left or right rather than scrolling right a good few screens b4 getting 2 the screen u want :p
I've worked out how 2 re-arrange the screens but screen 1 is still the default.
Also with screen 4 as the default its bang smack in the middle of my new wallpapers which is good as not much happening on the ends of these ones lol
