Is anyone else having an issue where a new message notification comes up with flashing light [as selected in settings] but if you ignore it the flashing light goes out and new message icon disappears from the notification area as though you have no new mail?

The other thing I notice is that the message that triggered the alert any subsequent emails received are marked as read when I go to my inbox.  This happens mostly at night, I will wake up and look at the inbox and see emails that I should have been alerted to the previous evening and any number of other emails, sitting there unread but marked as read.

I had thought that something was killing the service that shows the notification but that doesn't explain why messages are being marked as read. 

I have removed any other app that checks mail in case it is an IMAP issue where messages are being checked and marked as read by another email program.  Annoying problem to say the least.

This has only started happening with the latest Gmail update.
