Hi

My wife was looking at Samsung smartphone upgrade but we came across this phone.

Its a Alcatel Ultra 995 with single-core model with a 4.3-inch WVGA screen and Qualcomm’s processor clocking at 1.4GHz. In addition, it has a 5-megapixel camera on the back, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth, and many other familiar acronyms like HSDPA, HDMI, Wi-Fi, GPS and DLNA; plus a memory card slot.

Seems good value for money - any thoughts?

Online review seem to indicate its a phone released in third wiorld countries like India and philipinnes first rather than a lot for US or Europe.

What network provider are you planning to use? There a few Android handsets on 2degrees that go for a lot cheaper than that... Any 2degrees mobile handsets will work on Vodafone as well.

out household currently uses 2degrees.

my current phone is a huawei ideos u8150 android 2.2 @ $150
Its been a great phone at the price and though has slower cpu at 800mhz - it has been a great testbed to decide which smartphone feautures I require such as dropbox, calendar sync, transit apps, etc.

Its only poor points are very poor camera hence I dont see value in spending on high end $$$$ smartphones with iphone std screen resolution.

Under specs it says Unlocked WCDMA 850/2100 which means it will only fully work on Telecom's XT network

am just comparing this to Huawei Ascend posted by Freitasm in the post which if G300 is $100 more expensive

It's always better to say "NOTHING" because you can't rely/knowfor sure ifi it works where HE needs to use it.

I just realised I was confusing things the opposite way.

Since the One Touch Ultra 995 uses 850/2100 WCDMA bands but also all GSM bands it will fall back to 2G on 2Degrees and Vodafone so you will still be able to make calls and use 2G data (or EDGE)

The handset is 850/2100 WCDMA (3G). It also supports GSM (2G)

This means it will work fully on Telecom XT.

On Vodafone and 2degrees it will work in the main cities where 2100 3G is available (my previous post was the other way around, sorry).

It will work on 2G in most places for Vodafone and 2degrees. On Vodafone it will be VERY slow 2G (GPRS), on 2degrees it will be a bit faster 2G (EDGE).

thank you for clarification.

Certainly lots of pits falls in selecting phone so I presume this is not a issue with the Huawei ascent G300 on the 2 degrees network? (pardon if wrong thread)

As an aside, the Ascend G300 has almost matching specs to older X5, and you can get some good deals on that phone on trademe, or it's regularly on special in The Warehouse..
