Been using an LG P500 now and then.

It runs rings around my old iPhone 3G in every way but the keyboard.

Any suggestions for replacing the stock keyboard with something more precise?

The touch resolution seems adequate but the stock keyboard is not up to the task.

Find Swype. That made the input side of my P500 usable.

I ultimatey found the onboard storage too limiting, and the performance too frustrating, so my P500 was retired about a month ago.

Cool. I understand the input method, it's a good one.

but Is Swype an entire replacement keyboard or an overlay for stock keyboards

Swype all the way. Just get it, it's as simple as that.
You need Swype or similar to avoid the issues with the low res/small sized screen, and it does this rather well.

Whole replacement keyboard. I have also had good results on a smaller screen with slideit. Swiftkey is also good if you can get your head around next word prediction. Both are paid apps though but you can try before you buy from memory. Swype is good and free if you can find it or get on the everlasting beta test they seem to have.

Try Vultr using this link and get us both some credit:

Thanks for the pointers to Swype. Following the guide on the Swype website I found that that Swype is already installed. It came with the phone by default but was not enabled.

After a few minutes use I find it is far better than the default keyboard and has more options even when using it like a normal keyboard.

[To enable:> new text message > hold down in input field > select input method > choose Swype]
[The many swype keyboard options are in the usual phone 'settings' area elsewhere]
