Telecom is launching a new Android handset, the Motorola Defy XT. This dust, water and scratch resistant handset will be exclusive to Telecom for 12 months.

With a 3.7-inch scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass display, 1650mAh battery for up to 9.5 hours of talk time, sharp camera and fast web browsing.

It will retail for NZ$ 599.

Trying to get more information on Android version - I suspect it would be Android 2.3...

Confirmed: Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

This phone doesn't look too bad if you need something a little more rugged than the usual, but it's probably not for everyone. There are a few things that could be better:

- No ICS. It's 8 months since Google released ICS, and you'd expect that new models would have it (so long as the hardware is capable). The Defy XT isn't that highly spec'd, but should still be able to handle ICS. (The fact that Google now own Motorola makes this even more surprising.)

- Storage space. The phone only has 1GB onboard, and that's used for storing apps and their data. If you want to store photos or music then you'll have to shell out for a separate microSD card.

- Price. $599 is a little pricey for a phone of this spec, especially when you consider the parallel imported market. You can get a Galaxy Nexus (with 16GB storage and the absolute latest version of Android) for less than this.

Will any of its firmware upgrades be in the same 'testing' queue as the Sensation and One X?

I am sure you can count on that Undecided
Gingerbread would be a deal breaker for me.

I have been looking at weather proof phones recently (Auckland weather) but sometimes it is hard to compare models side by side. I tripped over this site the other day http://www.smartprix.com/compare.php?ids=2118,2089,933,1951 just delete the model you don't want and enter the name of what you're looking for.
Funnily though this site doesn't mention anything about water or dust proof for any of the models.
I think I'll wait until the Xperia Go is released here.
Hope this helps shk292

So, this is just a Defy Plus, right? Or have I missed something?  Hard to believe Telecom is trying to sell a phone with these specs for $599 in July 2012.  You can get a Defy plus for $338.  Or a Razr for $575.  Is Telecom targeting "those without a clue or Pricespy" as their target audience?

No, they are VERY different handsets:

Motorola Defy Plus
Motorola Defy XT

Nope, but you didn't use Google to find out they are different, so perhaps you shouldn't call Telecom on this one...

Er, yes, I did use Google to compare and contrast.  Let's see, what is the same:
 - CPU
 - display
 - ruggedness
 - Android version
 - Memory
 - Camera
 - Battery (OK, 1650mAh vs 1700mAh)
 - Talk time (6.8 hrs vs 7hrs)
 - WiFi versions
 - Apps
 - Ability to display Flash
 - Video capture and playback
 - Size and weight (within 5%)
 -FM Radio
 - light sensor, accelerometer, GPS, etc etc

What's different:
- 3G frequencies
- XT has a front camera
 - Anything else?

I still don't see how these are very different phones, sorry.  It seems that once again, by selecting Telecom as a network, handset choice is restricted

They are different handsets. The "XT" in the name is not related to Telecom XT, just a coincidence.

You can say the same for Vodafone - if you don't get a 900 MHz WCDMA handset you don't use their network to the fullest.

You can get any handset (with the appropriate band) and use it here - I actually have used two AT&T handsets recently until upgrading to my Nokia Lumia.

Agreed they are very slightly different but it seems little more than a re-badging and the price-spec balance is at least 12-18 months behind.

I'm happy with the various bands - I'm using a UK handset from the Orange network on 2 degrees.  It seems however, that 90% (??) of handsets support WCDMA 900 and 2100, with the remainder 850 and 2100 - and once again, Telecom is in the minority.

I'm not just being argumentative here - I kept seeing the posters by the road and thought this might be something new and exciting, but to me it's just a very slightly tweaked Defy Plus, which in turn was only a minor upgrade of the Defy.  I think I'd rather have a RAZR and a waterproof case for when I go boating, for that price

Thanks for that site - very useful.  Xperia Go seems to have only HVGA screen, not sure if I could go back to that after using WVGA for the last 18 months

While this is not the one with telecom bands, i'm extremely unimpressed with the specs for the price. Motorola rehashing old technology. Telecom overpricing it.
