I was just wondering why I would root the Nexus 7?  I rooted the phone I have at the moment to get rid of the carrier bloatware and later a quick upgrade to Gingerbread.

However the Nexus tablet won't have those issues (I presume it will get quick Android updates as they are released by Google) although I gather one advantage will be that I could attach an external USB drive.  I don't believe (at this stage anyway) this will be an issue for me so it won't unduly worry me if I can't attach another drive.

Outside that am I missing anything?

Lots of things! Root will let you use external storages, as you mention. But also allow backups of your apps and their data, use of PS3 controllers wirelessly and with games that don't natively support them, the ability to tell the Play Store you are accessing it from a US carrier etc for accessing region-locked apps, ability to use VPN apps to access region-locked content like Netflicks, access to custom ROMs which will improve performance/battery life/features etc. Lots of reasons to Root and they'll keep expanding too! Naturally it's up to each person to decide if they need Root badly enough to do it.

Updated first post with link to part one of our review.

Considering buying one from the UK - I presume the hardware and base OS is exactly the same no matter where you buy it from?

Also I find it amusing that Dick Smiths are using Google Play Movies/Music/Books as a selling point, either Google Play is coming to NZ or they've slipped up.

I grabbed a Nexus 7 yesterday as am currently in San Francisco region. Fortunately I was visiting a small town and a local store had stock. Pretty impressed so far, but as the video shows the unboxing was a slight challenge.

Bloody difficult to get it out of the sleeve, yes. I see Paulspain had a similar experience, I think they'll all be like that!

I am now an Nexus 7 owner! I was expecting to have to wait longer than the proposed date of "last week of july" that noelleeming had originally given me, getting it earlier has given me butterflies lol.

Fully impressed by the google now feature.
"google".... "what is the weather for christchurch"

in a ladies voice it returns 16 degrees along with a 5 day forecast on a card.
I went back to the main screen and it had 2 more cards waiting for me, one showing me how long itd take to get home and one showing an appointment I have tonight.

cant wait for the weekend to have a good play.

Those who pre-ordered with Noel Leemings, are they contacting you with confirmation the Nexus 7 is in store waiting for pickup?

I haven't had an email or phone contact to advise mine is available, but it was on pre-order. Unless the South Island shipment is a day delayed or whatever, for the extra time it takes to reach these depths.
