Can anyone recommend a commercial application for this? There are a couple of free ones but they appear dodge, so looking for a legitimate one.

Devices are a SonyEricsson ray and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7.

Uses samsungs own media streamer, works a treat in most cases. I was able to send video and music to mates Samsung TV and his Marrantz Amp

I haven't tried doubletwist on the devices that you listed, but I've used it on quite a few different devices with my AppleTV and it works really well.

Watching this thread with interest. I'm currently apple camp - but would give android/windows a go if I could get airplay to apple tv2 or apple tv 3 going.

One of my TVs is a first generation "Smart" televison, and it has almost no support for modern CODEC, so I purchased an AppleTV, which, when coupled with Twoky Media provides connectivity to a DLNA server (via handoff), however, this does not support the additional handoff features associated with AirPlay, e.g. YouTube, NFL GamePass, etc.

So I'm seeking an integrated solution that provides AirPlay equivalancy and not just DLNA.

Does this provide AirPlay functional equivalency or is it a DLNA style media server/controller?

If you want actual "AirPlay" then it is not going to work well on a non-Apple platform, as any implementation is going to be reverse-engineered hackery.

There's plenty of good alternative DLNA or similar solutions though. I use Plex which has a good Android and AppleTV client (ATV needs to be jailbroken however).

That's the conclusion I've come to, and just gone out and bought a iPhone 4S.

I have to wait until Friday for my iPhone (that's when the price drop comes into effect). I tried AirServer on the Mac (to try and use it as an AppleTV), ironically, the non-apple client (Twonky Mobile) could see it, but the apple devices (iPhone and iPad) could not. I may upgrade these to iOS 6 and test again.

I see there are a few applications that allow Android devices to become AirPlay servers for audio, but don't appear to support video.

As you noted some of these apps are not very mature.

Google Play Android HiFi

Google Play AirBubble

Google Play AirSync by doubleTwist

The latest version of QNAP NAS software version 3.7.1 now has QiTunesAir.

Also, something that doesn't help today, but is certainly a glimmer of hope for the future is MiraCast.

This is a WiFi Alliance standard for broadcasting music, videos and media to any Miracast certified device.

It's already on the Samsung Galaxy III, LG Optimus G, and a few of the high-end Sony Android XPERIA devices,

So, it won't be long for it to be on Sony and Samsung TVs and audio devices and should filter through to other TV and audio receivers soon.

Guess it's the Wi-Fi Alliances answer to Apple AirPlay.

And given most TV and Audio manufactures have no alliance to AirPlay, this could create a VERY big MiraCast everything talks to everything.. unless you're on an iPhone 5, Lets hope it doesn't get gimp'd.

Sorry, I don't have any Apple devices so I'm probably not being much help.

I'm using Twonky Mobile for the moment. Doesn't provide AirPlay features, but does allow me to redirect the Apple TV to use my my DLNA servers, so that will do for now.

Revision : current version of Twonky Mobile does support AirPlay (Airport Express and Apple TV), while iOS MediaConnect supports DLNA servers, so I'm now happily watching and listening to content from the DLNA server on AirPlay devices, via iOS or Android controllers without any jail breaking.

Been playing around with AirPlay apps on my new Nexus 7. Best free app I've found is Twonky Beam. Townky Mobile isn't available anymore by the looks of it. As above I can confirm it works pretty well. It has an inbuilt browser which lets you stream content from the web and you can browse your device for music, video and pictures. I might just ditch my iPhone 5 for a Note 2 :)

Edit: Twonky Mobile isn't compatible with the Nexus 7 so it is still available.
