This phone dropped off the radar a bit after its splashy announcement at MWC due to successive delays to release, but I wondered if there was anything people were curious to know about it?

Very nice spec for the price which came to $640 all up including shipping, when it comes here it should have a very competitive price point for what it offers...

Very close to stock Android ICS, large battery (5-6 hours screen on time per day according to Paul Obrien who has had his a few weeks now), good 720p 4.5inch screen, and importantly quite compact compared to other current flagships. I could see that appealing to quite a few people.

Very respectable benchmarks - 12323 in Antutu. 36fps in Egypt Classic offscreen in GLBench (Note 2 scores 66 for reference), again very respectable when you consider the Note 2 is right behind the leading Android GPU (Adreno 320).

Do you think it would be a better buy than a Galaxy S2 which is around that $500 price point where mid-range Androids fight it out?

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Did yours come with an english ROM on it? Is it Android 4.04?
Can't believe how long it has taken this handset to get out into the light of day, Price seems pretty good for what you are getting though.

Yeah, it sure has taken a long time to come, shame as it seems really very good and offers a combination of qualities that basically no one else is offering. It was really a very ambitious handset for Huawei, mostly because they used an in-house SoC solution (which as far as I can make out is the main reason for delays). Hopefully they can learn from that and get next years flagship to market in a timely fashion.

Came with Chinese ROM with English language option, I had pre-downloaded the 4.0.4 English ROM update from Huawei's website before it arrived and applied that out of the box.

My early impressions are that I'd take this over the S2 in a heartbeat (only reason to grab an S2 is for the extremely good developer support, but besides that it loses by a fair margin in most areas to the XL). Much (much!) better screen, quadcore processor, much better battery, notification LED, near-stock Android experience and comparable price point.

Considering how delayed this is, its interesting to see this on paper vs the nexus 4:

MicroSD and bigger battery - the Nexus seems to win in every other department - thoughts on this?

Correct, although the XL being narrower will make it easier to hold despite the increased weight and thickness. Worth making the point though that battery and micro SD are not small considerations for many users.

In the US market the Nexus 4 price point makes the XL basically dead in the water, but most everywhere else the XL will be cheaper than the Nexus 4, and that in concert with the micro SD and battery will make it a worthwhile proposition for some users.

Problem with Huawei is they make great kit for amazing prices but their device support is awful. Don't expect any OS upgrades so if it comes with ICS I'd bet it'll stay that way forever.

I'm speaking from bitter experience with the Ideos X5

Agree battery and SD card are big ticket items for some people but with a Nexus device you're guaranteed support and updates, hell my Nexus S has 4.1.2 on it and even the SGS3 hasn't :-)
