I'm trying to sort out a connection issue for a user. The Galaxy Y has always been erratic on connections for her, but it's got worse recently. Sync on email only happens on an occasional basis, and up till now she's fixed it by turning off mobile data, then turning it on again. Now she can't turn off mobile data: the checkbox dims, but the data continues, and going back to the data setting shows it on again. There doesn't appear to be an OS update for this (Telecom) mobile (it's on 2.3.6) and I don't want to root it, and there's only about 20MB space left on the handset: is it best just to do a user data wipe of the device and start again?

Have you checked for updates from the phone itself ? I had one (Telecom) recently, and it ran like a dog until I did the latest updates from the phone - IIRC you need to sign up for a Samsung account first, then perform a software update check from the settings menu.

Ran Samsung Kies on my PC and attached the Y, and said that there were no updates. Tried updating from phone, update not available (message was a little ambiguous). Telecom claimed 2.3.6 was the latest for the Galaxy Y, FWIW.
