if your vodafone sim works in a telecom phone then of course it is unlocked.

as of right now:

Telecom do not lock any of their phones.
2degrees do not lock any of their phones
Skinny lock some of their handsets
Vodafone lock some of their handsets

Aren't some of the settings on the telecom ones tuned for the telecom network? I just remember someone telling me prior to buying mine, that if I planned on using it on the vodafone network, not to buy a telecom branded one, only to buy a 2D or VF one. I ended up buying an international version, that was none branded or affiliated with any of the 3 telcso.

Probably, but that's very easy to change.

My Note II I purchased Parallel Imported.  It had the Hong Kong firmware on it.  After a while I got sick of that and flashed the stock Vodafone NZ firmware onto my phone.  Once all the settings and data a wiped, it's back to a 100% stock VFNZ phone.

Correct, some settings are tuned to Telecom's network. A few might even impact in battery life when the handset is used in another network without the proper changes.

They're settings you can't change that relate to "Fast Dormancy" on the network.  At the present time, the VFNZ Network supports Fast Dormancy (And thus it is enabled in the firmware) while XT doesn't, so it should be disabled.

There's an app on the play store that allows you to change it as you please, but you need to be rooted.

If you're interested in Fast Dormancy there's lots of info on Tinternet 'bout it, like.
