I've been using my S4 as a hotspot extensively over the past week.  However, I have an issue in that when ever the screen lock kicks in the attached device can no longer see the internet.   As soon as I unlock the screen or do anything that wakes the phone up, the attached device can see the internet again.

The device doesn't drop its connection to the S4.  The S4 just doesn't allow it out.

Has anyone else experienced this?

There is a setting that says what to do with Wi-Fi connections when your phone's screen turns off. It sounds like your phone is turning off Wi-Fi when the screen turns off.

Have a look at this setting:
Settings > Connections tab > Wi-Fi > menu button > Advanced > Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep

I would recommend setting this to Always as Wi-Fi uses very little power, even when it's not connected.

I've used this setting for quite some time with my SGS2 and it worked exactly as expected. Haven't tried with my S4 yet.

Thanks for the advice.  Unfortunately I already have this set.

Most battery saving apps will turn off data when the screen is off? When you turn the screen on, does it take a while for the data connection to show up?

Third party app! Right on the money. Thanks, folk!

I've had Easy Battery Saver running on various devices that I completely overlooked it.

Cheers
