I want to use it on 2 degrees (todays offer of $599..) is it locked , can it be unlocked easily?

I'd be surprised if the Xperia Z was locked to Vodafone, they've only recently started locking some phones, and then only for a few of the budget models so far.

The Vodafone Xperia Z is not locked. At this stage it's only a few entry-level prepay handsets.
