Just got my wife a Moto G and trying to get her contacts on it.

She had a iphone so imported all her contacts to Gmail and I can see them all listed under her contacts on Gmail (PC version)

On the phone I have it logged in under her Gmail (google) account and I thought contacts would just show up? But there is noting there, am I missing a step.

Is Google set up to sync? Go to settings > accounts > google and check last sync.

As already mentioned, you should turn the "sync' on in (usually) Menu -> Settings -> Accounts (or a similar path - it varies slightly by vendor an Android version).

You will probably want to limit what can sync. For example, I do not want my 9,800 Google+ followers sync'd to my phone. Facebook and Skype? No thanks. Allowing all that takes hours (as I once discovered)

I create a group in Gmail called "People" and I add to it the people I want on my phone. I then set my phone's Contacts to display the Google group "People".

Set up this way, ANY Android phone I login to will automatically sync only those people I want to my phone. Every phone.

It takes a few minutes to set up, but ever after all you need to do is login to the phone with your gmail account and then set the display options in Contacts (or People - depending on the phone).

Also be sure to create any NEW contacts on the phone not as "phone" but as Google entries. This will see them synced to your gmail account. NUmber entered into the phone itself won't be synced...and will certainly be lost when the phone is lost, sold, or factory reset.

As for existing contacts, my daughter emailed all the contacts to her GMail account and then imported them. She had that done in minutes.
