I share events in my Google calendar with my partner by adding her to the event, over there on the right in the web interface. I add email and pop-up notifications to the events. While I get the pop-ups on my phone hers seem to come in via text. Does anyone know how to make them actual popups?

She has a Moto G, and uses Textra.

I'm not 100% certain, as I don't use the Google calandar app on the mobile - I use the default calendar app that was installed on the phone. Of course that app links to my Google calendar, and it's there that I've set up my preferences. Also, I don't invite my wife to my events, though I should point out that's not how it might sound: I'm all Android/Google and she's Apple all the way. Oh well, they say opposites attract...

Anyway, I'm pretty sure your partner has to set up her Google calendar to say that pop-ups are her preferred method of getting notifications, regardless of what you specify when you create the event. Get her to open her Google calandar on a PC, click the dropdown arrow next to My calendars in the left navigation, and click Settings. Then click Reminders and notifications for the calendar, and select Pop-up as the default reminder instead of Email, and set a reminder time. She can probably do this through the Google calendar app itself, but as I don't use it I can't tell you the steps to take...

Edit: I should add that I don't think she can be invited to an event by a pop-up - only via email or SMS. But once she "accepts" the event email or text and adds it to her calendar, then the above steps should ensure she gets a pop-up reminder.

We do something similar but with a shared calendar. I've not asked my wife what kind of notifications she gets.

How easy is it to set up a shared calendar and subscribe from phones and the website? That'd be handy for trips and noting when we're each free/busy.

Easy to do via the website. Just go in to the calendar settings and share it, from memory. Then it will appear in the other person's online login and if not done automatically, go to your calendar app and make sure you select the calendar in "choose calendars" or whatever your app calls it.

Not trying to hijack the thread but I use Google calendar for work and all my appointments. I have it set to remind me 1 day before the event but it always reminds me 2 days out. My time zone settings are all correct so don't know why that is. I just changed it to two hours before to see if that makes any difference.
