I've splashed out a snapped up a refurbed Tab Pro 12.2 for my birthday and I want to get a decent cover to protect it from my kids. The top contender at this point is the Otterbox Defender which looks like it's rock solid, if not a little weighty. I'm not concerned about lugging round the extra weight, but I have heard that the 12.2 tablets run a little hot, and I'm concerned that wrapping it in so much extra plastic might be a recipe for cooking the innards.

Has anyone here got experience with the bigger Galaxy tablets? Is the heating likely to be an issue?

Never had any problems with my 12.2 inch model. I do not have a cover for mine and I have not had any experience where it generated any extra heat. I have been looking for a cover but at this stage, have not found one

I have the 10.1 Note LTE version with the 2.2GHz Quad core CPU.

It doesn't seem to heat up to any noticeable extent.

That is pretty much the same hardware setup as the 12.2 Note LTE.

The non-LTE versions run Samsung's Octa core CPU AFAIK.

I bought the ridiculously expensive Samsung cover. It does work well for me though.

Cheers JWR - is that the 'book cover'? Do you feel like it would offer significant protection, say in the case of a drop?

Yes. It is the Book Cover.

I feel it would offer significant protection. But, I was also concerned about keeping the tablet thin and getting access to all the ports and the stylus.

For me, the Book Cover offered the best compromise.

All the corners are covered by plastic. The bottom two corners (near USB port) have much beefier protection with small bumpers.

I think the battery weight is more towards the bottom and the tablet would tend to land on the bottom edge.

It isn't an experiment I want to try:)

Hey thanks for the input - I also decided to go for the Samsung BookCover. I might try and get a neoprene sleeve to over it too, just to keep out dust and the other bits & pieces of crud floating around in my bag. I agree that it's a pretty good compromise, and the logitech case is a LOT more expensive (also I didn't need the keyboard).

Did see some reports of the auto-off feature triggering when the cover was folded right the way back but no issues with that myself. Only thing that seems a bit silly is not making some sort of allowance for using the camera when cover is back.

There actually aren't a lot of options for the bigger tablets at this point anyway, but happy with the Samsung cover for now.

I have the book cover from Samsung. No real protection on the corners when it's in a bag etc. Also bblocs the camera when it's opened.

I just purchased one of these tablets on the weekend, and was looking for case options. Since I am tossing up whether to use this as a permanent replacement for my laptop, I splashed out and got the Logitech Keyboard case. I can't specifically compare it to the Samsung offering as I haven't seen it in person, but it seems to have very good protection of all sides and corners, doesn't block the camera, and you can use it standing up and lying flat. It uses magnetic connections in the corners, to stop it from opening when it shouldn't, and these are quite strong, so I have complete faith in them.

Here are some pics of it at different angles

It wouldn't look out of place carrying it on it's own, but I did get a small 13" notebook carry bag for it, for those times where I had to transport it, for whatever reason.
