After sitting around home procrastinating study for my NCEA exams, I've been thinking about finally delving into the Android world by picking up a cheap 7" tablet. I want to get it from Amazon, as they tend to have the best customer service and best prices.

I'm looking at the MeMo Pad 7 ME176CX, and I was wondering has anyone here on Geekone got one that they could share their thoughts on?

I want to spend no more than $180, and I looked at the Nexus 7, and the specs are nice but I just really don't like the Aspect Ratio and how tall it is, and according to reviews online, the MeMo Pad 7 is pretty close to the Nexus 7 in terms of performance and specs, and it has a micro-SD card slot too. I just want to know before I commit to buying it if there are any better value for money tablets in the same price range. I wish I liked Windows 8.1, I looked at the HP Stream 7 and Dell Venue tablets and I think they look like decent devices, but again, the Windows app store is rather lacking in apps.

No replies so far, but I've been seeing good things about the Dell Venue 8 Android tablet on Amazon, again, has anyone here on GZ used/owned one of these?

Ahh.. I personally have had the Nexus 7 tablet and gotta say, I loved it. It was an awesome tablet and did what it did really well. Is there any reason you wanted an SD card?

Depends what you will be doing with the tablet mate. What is your use case. With the cheaper 7 inch tablets, you will be getting that sort of quality as well. I think I can say that most people here would prefer the Nexus 7 over anything else in the 7 inch range (correct me if Im wrong).

I think one of the guys here also mentioned the Dell Venue 7 3000 - have a look at that.. It is 199 NZD delivered.

Thanks for your reply! I've looked at the Nexus 7, and to be honest, the aspect ratio is really turning me away from it, it's way too tall, apart from that I love that it's just a pure Android experience with no bloatware.

My use case will only really be browsing Reddit, watching YouTube, using uTorrent mobile (that's why I want the SD card), and Spotify.

I don't need a real powerhouse, but just something that will do these basic tasks well. I looked at that Dell Venue, but I'm pretty sure that it runs Windows 8, and I'm after Android. There are Dell Venues on Amazon that run Android though, in a 7" and 8" size, but I don't know much about them.

Hmm.. i had a good think about the aspect ratio - i prefer the Nexus 7 aspect ratio than my iPad mini (I have been through quite a few tablets this year).

Ahh another option for you (I doubt it is still available) is LG GPad 8.3 Google Edition. This one has the SD card and is quite good as well. I managed to snag 1 when they were 270 NZD delivered.

The Dell Venue 7 3000 I speak of is Android 4.4 - not Venue Pro (which is the Windows tab - I have had the Dell Venue Pro 8 as well - not keen on Windows tabs after getting that one)

Do you have a budget? Any reason you want to get from Amazon only? I will throw this one at you - Samsung Tab Pro 8.4. Reason I am throwing this one at you is that I have seen this for $399 at Dick Smith in Sylvia park. It is not as good as the Tab S, but it is still pretty decent.

I've looked at the G Pad 8.3, but the most I can really spend is $200, so that's probably out of reach unfortunately.

I'm open to places other than Amazon, it's just they seem to have a really good choice with lower prices than NZ retailers.

I haven't used any of the more recent Samsung tablets, but from the ones I have used I'm not a fan of TouchWiz and all the preloaded crap Samsung put on their tablets. I'll take another look at that Venue 7 3000 though!

Oh I agree with you that touchwiz is crap. I had a Galaxy Note 8.0 - loved it and hated it at the same time. Hated it because of touchwiz.

Ahh fair enough. Have a look at that Dell model. Besides that, I think Asus Memo would be the one.

I'm also looking at getting an Asus MeMO for my daughter. Just wondering if you ended up getting one and what you think of it so far? I've never ordered anything off Amazon before. I assume the prices are American? What's the shipping cost like? I may have left it too late for that option anyway as her birthday is on 15 December and I need it by then. She wants a Samsung Galaxy Lite but the Asus seems to have much better specs for a similar price. When she's older she can get what she wants with her own money.

Hi there,

In the end I for various reasons I decided to get the HP Stream 7 instead, which has very similar specs, but runs Windows 8.

I've ordered things from Amazon many times and they have excellent customer service, and the shipping costs tend to be very reasonable too. If you ordered soon and used expedited shipping (costs a bit more) you *should* be able to get the tablet before the 15th, but the shipping estimate Amazon gives you before you pay in checkout should give how long it will take. Amazon's prices are in USD, but if you simply type into Google "100USD to NZD" it will easily convert the price for you.

If I were to get an Android Tablet instead of Windows I would definitely get the MeMo Pad. It has much better specs than the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite, and is way cheaper too (compared to local retailers selling the Tab). My sister got the Tab 3 a year ago and while it's decent, it's pretty slow and the screen's not very nice to look at. I'd definitely recommend you get the MeMo Pad instead.

Thanks for your quick reply. I think the only reason she was drawn to the Samsung was the colours (she's almost 11) - lol! We'll have to shop around for the best deal on the Asus.
