Hey guys,

I have an HTC One M8. When I bought it from Noel Leeming the saleman said it was the unlocked version. Now as far as I know, the unlocked versions have received the recent update to Android 5.0 (Lollipop)

Is there anyway I can check that my phone is the unlocked version? And if it is unlocked, any idea why haven't I received the update yet?

Nothing to do with whether or not it's locked. I take it it's a carrier branded model? If it's carrier branded, you'll have to wait for the carrier to release the update.

Whether a phone is locked or unlocked makes no difference to the release of software - it's the model number that defines this.

As to whether our phone is locked - it would have come with information clearly saying this if it did. I wasn't aware of any SIM locking of high end phones from any network.

As BigHammer pointed out. HTC releases the software for testing by operators. Operators will test and give an OK for updates to go out. HTC will then schedule the update.

It doesn't matter what SIM you have on your phone, if it's "branded" (sold by an operator or a model usually sold by an operator) then you have to wait until this is completed by that operator.

Android 5.0 has not been approved yet in New Zealand so you won't receive it unless you change your phone ROM to something else - and risk getting it bricked in the process.

Is this specific to NZ? Because in the US, carriers release their updates weeks, sometimes months after HTC releases the update for Unlocked and Developer versions of the phone.

Same here but I actually found out that the NZ stok of HTC M8 that was sold via NZ retail channels is in fact a Vodafone AU model. That model is still going though testing with Vodefone AU.
All we can do is wait.

HTC uses a single SKU and software build across multiple network operators rather than making a unique build for each of them. It's not a Vodafone AU model any more than it's a 2degrees, Telecom, or Vodafone NZ model. Every network partner that ranges that particular version needs to test the update before it can go live. HTC are pretty good at pushing OTAs out once approval is received though.
