As some of you will know, I have long waited for a tablet with a high-resolution screen, plenty of CPU and GPU, to replace my aging but utterly brilliant Kindle Fire 8.9 HDX Second Gen device.

I have tried a few tablets over the past couple of years, but ultimately found that nothing I've seen or touched as been close to what I needed. The Galaxy Tab S was a disappointment in how it handled games, lagging and generally feeling slow. Nice form factor, good screen, but not good enough. I tried a Nvidia Shield K1 Tablet, and my evaluation lasted all of 10 minutes before the low-resolution screen drove me insane.

Recently Samsung announced it's Galaxy Tab S3, which comes with the Samsung S Pen and has a 9.7" HDR Compatible screen, Snapdragon 820 Processor, weighs 429 Grams. I was hooked immediately based on specifications, but was floored when the NZ RRP was said to be $1200 for the 32GB Wifi Model. I decided I'd either skip it and resign myself to an iPad (eww) despite being very heavily invested in the Android eco System, including Amazons stuff.

I considered importing myself one from the USA, but in the end there was a 15% difference in price, which is what I consider to be about the maximum I'd pay premium for local support and warranty. I ordered one and had it shipped, still trying to come to grips with the cost.

My reservations didn't last long, once I got my package and pulled it apart.

WOW, it's seriously, seriously beautiful. Apple don't have anything on this. It's all glass, and glossy (finger print magnet) and SO fast. The high resolution screen is breathtaking, and I have yet to find a game it doesn't cope with easily. It's a pleasure to surf with and I find myself using it a lot at home, even though I have a really fantastic Galaxy S8+ as well.

It has great sound and takes reasonable photos and videos, and the pen is very useful, though, I note disappointedly, that it doesn't have an inbuilt pen holder place.

It's stupid expensive, and even me, who generally can find a way to justify such expense given my strong proposensity for gadgets, still feel a little bad about it's cost, but honestly, you couldn't pry it from my cold dead hands, and I would do it again, if I had to.

Now I just need to find a case because I am pretty sure, the first time it gets knocked, it's gone burger!

Sorry, was kind of rushed, I don't really do photo's cause there are plenty of them. To be honest, I think it's pretty much the best tablet (android or IOS) I've ever seen. (the previous best was that Kindle HDX, and if they updated it, I'd buy one of those in a heartbeat).

The only problem I have is the home button finger print scanner which is hit and miss.

I have a similar situation, I do have an iPad Air 2 but I also like to have a smaller lighter tablet for when my hands are bad. For that purpose I have an aging Samsung Galaxy S2 8" and it has been great. It is light, fast, expandable with a very good screen. I have been looking a replacement options and there is not a lot out there. Samsung make good tablets even with Androids limitations its a shame their phones don't match their tablets.

I will have to look at the S3 following your review.

@mikeb4 I would say traditionally, Samsungs phones have been 100% better than their tablets.

Price no object, I consider the S3 to be the best tablet money can buy in NZ now. This obviously excludes Windows Tablets like the HP 1012 because it doesn't run IOS/Android.

I wish someone would design one of these with more than one USB port.

I had a play with one in JB over the weekend. I want to replace my 10.1" Sony Xperia Z tablet. It still holds up for video, but is slow in other regards.

I was very impressed with the S3, but held back as the 9.7" 4:3 screen is smaller than my current (10.2" 16:10) and I'm not sure I would be happy with the smaller size for movies.

However, here's the rub -  when playing in-store I assumed the S3 was priced at $599, ie. same as the S2 it replaced. I was gob-smacked when I read your review and saw the price - I assumed there was a mistake.

That pricing for a 9.7" tablet is insane - and that's sans keyboard!

I'll wait until the Chromebook Pro arrives and re-evaluate. One key advantage with a Chromebook over Android tablet is that you get to use a full version of Chrome (I hate the Android Chrome browser). If android apps finally get to play nicely in the Chromebook, it may be the one for me.

For me the 4:3 screen is the ideal for a tablet. It's a good format for what I use a tablet for. 16:9 is great for a phone, but I mainly use a tablet for storing and reading documents and they look best on 4:3 screens.

I agree, I love the format this screen uses. I had a 10.2" tablet at some stage, pretty sure once the HDR kicked in, the half an inch size difference probably won't matter any more.

The last few days I've spent more time with it. I love this thing, it's a stunner.

Ok, all you tablet jockeys.

I have never managed to grasp the point of them. I need whatever portable device I have (at present, a Surface Pro 4) to

1) Allow a card reader to be connected (and provide adequate power to run it - which  the SP does not) or have an SD card slot (not a micro one)

2) Ingest perhaps 1500 - 2000 images from the SD cards at one time shot as 40Mp RAW files

3) Spit the images out again onto several HDDs as backups

4) Run decent image editing software, ideally Adobe Lightroom

Is there a tablet that will efficiently do that?

I bought mine from Noel Leeming - with the bundled keyboard cover for an extra $100.

I agree that it does cost a bit but it is cheaper (and IMHO better) than my wife's iPad Pro.

You are talking about the less than 2 years old Tab S2?

Is the Tab S3 $450 better than the Tab S2? ($1,149 vs $749).

Apart from the glass back, they look virtually identical and have the same resolution screen.

Differences as I understand them:

HDR Screen, better processor (Important to me), SPen (I love this), bigger battery, more ram.

I think it's $450 there.

More differences in detail:
