Hi,

Can anyone recommend an app that will allow me to get browse CIFS shares on my NAS from my Android phone ?

I have one from ASUS that works great ... but ... if I have a VPN connection to home going over cell (4G/LTE etc) the app doesn't believe there is a network connection and wants WiFi connected.  So limits that apps usefullnes to VPN over Wifi situations.

Any pointers ?

Thanks!

A big part of that depends on which SMB versions your NAS supports. It's common for file manager apps to support SMB v1.0 only, but it's becoming common for NASes to disable v1.0 because of security bugs. A NAS may only allow v2.0 or v3.0 connections, which the apps typically don't support.

I had used ES as a file manager for a while, and that has SMB support (unknown version). However, it got very bloated and intrusive so I don't recommend it.

I've been using FX as a file manager and I've been liking it. Network file management is a premium option that you can try for a while, but I've found it with paying for to keep long-term. My NAS has SMB v1.0 disabled, and FX only supports v1.0, so I haven't been able to use that. But I do have SFTP file access to the NAS, and that works beautifully, even over a VPN connection to home.

Others may have better suggestions, but certainly give FX a try and see what you think.
