One of the reasons I went with a cheap Samsung and NFC was thinking I could use samsung pay.

I watched a review on youtube where they use many different types of terminals etc, with Samsung, Google and Apple pay. Samsung pay worked on twice as many occassions and google and apple worked out about the same.

So are my only options in NZ Google pay and my local bank app?

Will Samsung pay ever work in NZ?

It seems just as easy to carry a paywave bank card?

Im new to this so please go easy.

So it appears Samsung pay will work on the older magnetic stripe POS machines, where small Dairies dont want to pay the extra for Paywave. Android pay will not work on the magnetic stripe systems.

So at this point in time android pay is pointless as half the places I go to dont want to pay to upgrade from the mgnetic swipe systems to paywave sort, where if we had Samsung pay we would have no problems.

Samsung Pay would require your credit card provider's support.

At this stage I dont think any NZ bank is going to do that.

Samsung pay would be of zero benefit and wouldn't solve any problems.

Even if it was supported by a NZ bank EMV requirements mean it wouldn't work with MSR on a terminal, and even if it did it would still require the terminal to have a credit card merchant account. Most dairies and so on only accept EFTPOS, not credit cards, so you'd never be able to use it for EMV on such a terminal even if the bank allowed (which they would never do) EMV rules to be relaxed.

We're not the US which is 20 years behind the rest of the world when it comes to payment and banking systems..

Answering your question: Samsung Pay is not available in New Zealand. Banks and credit card companies do not support Samsung Pay in New Zealand yet.

Long answer: NFC payments are linked to credit/debit cards managed by credit card companies.

I continue to be surprised by all the long, laborious comments I've seen in the Huawei high end phones and others and you got caught in this small detail.

The other aspect is that it's been discussed in many other threads here on GZ, and I assume elsewhere, that Samsung Pay isn't supported in NZ. I certainly knew this as a result of reading GZ content prior to buying both my current and Samsung watches, so accepted it wouldn't be a feature that would work.

Surely if it's a feature you planned to use on the phones wouldn't a bit of due diligence have been appropriate, ie check it out prior to buying the phones?
