So the OP Nord looks and feels great. But PlayStore is playing up.

I believe this is not a phone specific issue as there are a millions posts on the net about it, but the half dozen likely ones I have tried are not working.

Is there something generic I need to do to get it updating the apps and being able to download new ones?

Since this is a new phone I'd simply factory reset it and start over.

The other option is play store app settings reset/clear cache

OP have an account migration app from old phone to new one. Have done that, photos etc and all linked google account info has been migrated. Will I lose all this again with a factor reset? Otherwise I will just go around in the same circle.

Have done that, have stalled it, even cleared the other app related cache. Ugggh.

Make sure you are connected via Wi-Fi. By default, the Play store will only update apps via Wi-Fi. You have to change the settings to update apps via mobile data.

Of course a factory reset you will lose everything on the handset, That is why it is called a ' factory reset '

Yes seemed obvious, just not sure how it will help when I need that data/content migrated. Contacts etc.

Yes I have it set to wifi in playstore, have tried both.

I uninstalled the Playstore app updates, now no updates are waiting for me. weird.

Nothing is working. I tried uninstalling playstore updates, no app updates showing of course, then installed latest PS again, now all the app updates are there but no matter what i try, either update all, or individually, they do not update.

Now they are updating after me looking at them for 15 mins thinking lol. Frustrating. Common problem.

Was just about to do the full factory reset.

Will delete the thread if it keeps working. Is stuck on 99%  but will see if that app finishes.

A factory reset will erase the new phone. You still have the old one? You would juat have to redo the process to copy content across.

Yeah but it was factory fresh the first time, so I think I would just be repeating the process. Thanks though, that was my next step but it has sprung into life.

BUT, whatever I have done, might have been uninstalling latest playstore then reinstalling its updates, but now its working. My advice, do all the above, ie delete the cache etc, but after a phone cache deletion, then making sure playstore is up to date, just let the thing sit for a while. when it has 38 apps to update and you select all, it doesnt update in a logical manner, ie will jump from nothing for 5 mins, then start installing an app, get stuck at 60% then suddenly it finishes and next app is already 80% done. :-)

Problem solved, thanks all for the tips on how to solve it. Mrs will be pleased. Now I need a new personal phone.

I have the same problem tonight on my S9 for the first time ever. Not a phone issue & something funky with all of Google. YouTube is also stalling massively.
