Firstly I am a smartphone noob, so be gentle.
I have just got a parallel imported HTC Hero, and while I have managed to successfully get the thing working and connecting to the web via wifi and GPRS (is that the correct acronym?) I now want to download some apps from the Android Market but there is no shortcut on the phone that I can find to get to it.  (User manual says there should be one HOME>Apps>Market).  I set up a google account when I first booted the phone, but now when I try to log into my account all I get is a blank screen.  I don't know if the two are related.  I found a thread that talked about a factory reset but that didn't seem to make any difference.
Any assistance appreciated.

EDIT:  It would appear that a shortcut called "slideME" is what is on this phone for downloading apps.  Anyone have any comments on this site?  And can I still get APKs that I have downloaded to my PC (from Android Market) on to my phone?

EDIT2:  While I'm in a questioning frame of mind,  My phone seems to connect using HSPA according to the screen icons - is it just because the 3G signal is not the best or do I need to revisit my APN settings (currently direct.vodafone.com) I am on prepay plus BBLite.

Edit3:  Told you I was a noob!  Can anyone confirm that HSPA is actually a 3G mode? Embarassed

Close Out Edit:  It would appear that Market only comes packaged with SOME Heroes depending on where in the world they are sold (manufacturer must pay a tariff to Google).  The replacement installed is slideME and I also found Getjay. All because I was looking for a video player.  If google seriously wants to compete with Apple as far as apps go they will have to do a lot better.

Just an update to close off this thread.  I finally bit the bullet and rooted and loaded a new ROM on my hero.  I now have access to Market and all its goodness.  The process didn't prove that difficult in the end, but that didn't stop me holding my breath while doing it.

HSPA is 3G and then some pretty much. Without googling, 3G is 3 Mb/s max downstream, and HSPA is at least 7Mb/s down.

In the winmo world, unlocking/flashing is the equivalent of "rooting" your android device. It's not hard also, but my heart still skipped a few beats watching the upgrade process and thinking "am i now about to watch several hundred dollars do down the drain" :D
