Heya - my apologies if this is not in the correct section of the forum ...

I'm wanting to get a phone car cradle for my HTC Desire - something like this:
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/htc-desire-car-pack-p24202.htm

but from a place that will ship to New Zealand... Anyone have recommendations?

Thanks in advance!
Jeremy

My Desire is currently 'in transit' from clove.co.uk
I'm expecting it on Monday or Tuesday (ordered it ages ago before the whole ash cloud saga!)

I have just bought this:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Mobile-phones/Accessories/Car-kits/auction-285368512.htm

I also bought the following from the same seller:

1 x HTC Google Nexus One 1 Screen Protector @6.99ea
1 x Car kit cradle @13.99ea

1 x Micro USB Car Charger @13.95ea (These are 1000mA)
1 x Micro USB PC Cable @6.99ea
TOTAL = $41.92
Less 15% discount -$6.30
Courierpost = $3
TOTAL = $38.62

So contact him directly and ask for the same deal if you like :)  he'll give you discount cause of the trademe success fee savings
alex at lx2001.co.nz

he also sells a more grunty looking windshield holder for 27.99

I will let you know on tuesday how it all works out if i've got it all by then.

hope this helps
Tim

Hi Jellyweb

How did you go with the kit you bought off lx2001? In particular how does the screen protector feel? The trader is still selling these and I'm thinking of getting one for my desire.

I'm interested in the car cradle also!  Any chance of taking a pic or two of the phone sitting in it?  Is it vent mounted?

Thanks

I got identical screen protector from eBay and didn't like it one bit. I'm not sure what Jellyweb's opinion of it is, but now we're both waiting for our Zagg Invisible Shield.

Hi Guys,
The screen protector is pretty budget.  Also when I got it he was only selling Nexus One ones, and i thought since the phones are so similar the screens were the same size.
Well, the N1 screen's area must be slightly wider (even though the AMOLED panel under the screen is the same), and also higher so this wasn't a perfect fit.  I ended up trimming the height and have it on temporarily while I wait for my Zagg screen to arrive.
lx2000 is however now advertising HTC Desire screen protectors, so they should be a perfect fit.
I bought a Zagg as it sounds like the business, and the one i got from lx2000 was pretty crap to be honest.  I'm sure it'll add some protection, but it also seems to show finger smudges worse, so overall I can't recommend it.

My advice is just fork out the extra $15 bucks and get something decent.  Actually, before I give that advice I should wait till the Zagg arrives and let you know what that's like!  I ordered it on Monday, and it was shipped (standard US air mail) on Tuesday. I was hoping it would have arrived by now but hasn't.  should only be a day or two away.  Will let you know.
p.s If you want 30% off Zagg be sure to enter their weekly competition (i.e. sign up to their newsletter!) first, you will then get emailed a 30% off coupon code which you can use at the checkout.  the screen protector and shipping should be just under NZ$20

As far as the cradle goes, this is pretty good.  it mounts to the windshield, and only fell off once as I was pressing the screen, but since then it's been stuck on pretty well.  the Desire fits fine, although the little 'shelf' at the bottom could stick out a little more, no problems with this though.  Makes reading the Herald & facebook when stuck in traffic a pleasure :)  (DON'T read or use your device while actually driving!)

Also I can recommend the car charger, and a spare microusb cable from this guy (that way you can leave one at work, and one at home)

I will try  get some photos posted soon.

Cheers
Tim

Ha, we must have been posting at the same time!  I agree, I don't like the budget screen protector.  will let you guys know what the Zagg is like.

I got cheap universal car mount from Trademe for like $15, attaches to the windscreen, was a good buy for the money - the adjustable arms has meant its fit all my phones no matter what their size, or button/charger connection positions happen to be.

I got one of these http://www.trademe.co.nz/Mobile-phones/Accessories/Car-kits/auction-288905334.htm and its fine. I thought it would be crap, but for $7 I wasnt too worried, but it does the job perfectly.

Does that one leave the possibility to record video on the window? I'm interested in recorded some on track footage with it.

damn, that looks like the same one I got for about $15!
And yes, the top of the phone does stick out above the cradle, so you could take photos or video record while driving if you wanted to!

Ok, so I got my Zagg yesterday, and fitted it last night.  After a bit of stress trying to get it all perfect, with not a speck of dust under it, I managed to do a fairly good job in the end. (still have a tiny speck under it which i can live with).  Another minor disappointment was that the Zagg screen protector actually arrived with a small blemish - a thin fibre-line (smaller than hairline!) scratch on it.  I will also live with this until I take them up on the lifetime warranty.

First impressions:  the feel of it is a bit too tacky for my liking.  they do say it's 'grippy' but I don't see why anyone would want a grippy screen.  fine for the back if you get a full body cover, but they really should make the screen protectors a nice silky smooth finish, rather than have grip.
I will reserve judgement till later, but that's my one complaint right now (maybe i'll get used to this an it won't be an issue).

Will be interested to see what dpw thinks of his?

I do feel safe with it though,  I feel like i can rub my keys on the screen without fear!  I won't try that though, especially since it has only been on for about 10 hours and it needs a full 24 to cure and harden properly!

will keep you posted.

p.s.  sorry i don't have a photo of my car mount yet.  i would have done it ages ago if i could take this with the Desire, but for obvious reasons i can't!

Hey Jelly, I would be interested to hear how you get on with your Zagg, mine is here on my desk, but I havent had a chance to fit it yet.

I dont like the sound of grippy to be honest, maybe it will smooth out over time? The cheap screen protectors I got from Ebay are great, but obviously not as prtective as the Zagg.

Damn! Still haven't got mine - JellyWeb, was your parcel a signature-required one? I suspect it's not - hope it's not. I am also a bit worried about the stickiness but hoping that will reduce as it "cures" over time.

I can say make sure you have lots of time to fit it - don't rush :)
No, was just standard post.  I think I ordered mine only a day or to before you, so you should get yours soon.  just be extra careful not to scratch it till then Wink

See my post here for comments on the Zagg.  I found the same thing, and worse still the surface wasn't quite flat enough for my liking - it's somewhat rippled. I also found that after only a couple of weeks of use the edges of the Zagg were hairier than my arms with all the lint that got picked up.

Try Phantom Skinz - can't speak highly enough of them, and just google for the latest discount code.  They supply two skins shipped for less than a single Zagg and I found it (strangely) easier to apply and much better quality.
