Hey guys,
Just ordered my Desire last night, i just have a question regarding its data use.
Can the 3G data setting be turned off ie. so you dont get stung by the cost?

I know its a data hungry device, but initially i just want to use it over my home wifi to
get used to it, how it works etc. Eventually i'll get a prepay data plan, (will be using it on VFNZ or 2D, havnt decided yet)
Its my first touchscreen phone let alone Android so i think it will take some getting used to :D

There are apps there to monitor your 3g with '3g watchdog' and I am not sure what the app called for killing the APN and turning it on again when wanted. May be others can help

There is a widget to disable the mobile network. From the Sense UI, add(+)/widget/settings/mobile network. Tap once to toggle on, and again to toggle off. Simple. And as above 3G Watchdog is great for keeping tabs on what you do use. Hope this helps.

Note this only disables data, not phone/messaging.

Even if you don't turn off 3G data as BigHammer suggests, it always uses known wifi networks by preference to mobile data.

Correct. But when it does use mobile data, it can be thirsty. The Desire uses quite a bit more data than my old E71 did. I'm now only using mobile data if I need to and not on all the time as I did previously.

Awesome, thanks for the quick replies guys. That really helps alot, reassuring that i wont be racking up the data costs!
Another question, i know a lot of people on the forum bought their Desire's from Clove or Mobicity, (i ordered mine from the latter), what charger are you guys using?
I know the original charger is included with an adaptor, and also Mobicity include an 'Australian wall charger'.
Im really fussy so the adaptor method kinda irks me, and im kinda scared the 'Australian wall charger' from Mobicity will be a cheap one that could eventually fry the handset.. Maybe im just being paranoid lol

I've looked around a bit and seen this one

Picking the Aussie one will be the HTC unit with Aussie plug. Same as the NZ plug so should be better than the Clove option I have. Actually only using the original as a spare now as I have two other USB 1Amp chargers with the right pins.

Oh and the one you list doesn't say if it's microUSB or not, so hard to say?

Yeah, guess i will have to wait and see
If i am to go and buy a micro-usb charger for it, is there anything i should be paying particular attention to in terms of power output or voltage etc?

I have two other mains chargers, which are both USB 1Amp chargers. Handy as I can use them to charge anything that can charge from a USB port. Also have a 1Amp Belkin car cigi lighter charger. All the plug pack chargers with integrated cables that I've seen have been around the 500mA mark which should be okay technically but not been impressed with their appearance / build quality.

Charger - initially I just used the charger plugged up to USB on my computer, but this does charge quite slowly compared with plugging it up to the wall. Eventually I went in to DSE and picked up a usb charger set which includes a usb to power plug adapter as well as a usb to car charger adapter. I can't remember the brand off the top of my head, and I'm not sure if it's good for my phone to use something like this (if not please let me know!).

Data - I normally do use quite a bit of data, I had my n95 connected to the internet and fring pretty much constantly and it only ate ~30mb per month (it was more when I started to sync emails). The Desire consumes a lot more data. After two weeks of using it I was at over 120mb of data, but I have sync enabled on most if not all of my apps. Also I was switching to WiFi when i got home.

Might be worth noting I have a lot of data intensive apps running too ... gmail, exchange, friend stream (twitter + facebook), gtalk, fring, android town. I don't use maps much from day to day (maybe once a week?) and I browse the web occasionally (maybe 10 quick visits in a day).

I'm in the process of changing my mobile plan at the moment to allow for more data and less of everything else (which I wasn't using much anyway). I'd be interested to hear what kind of mobile plans everyone else is on.
