I've just received the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro... This handset is tiny! Some pictures below. Will charge it now and use the rest of the week. More on this later.

Feel free to discuss/ask here but remember I can't root this handset as it is going back to Sony Ericsson soon.

And to show how small the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro really is, I took a few pictures comparing it to the LG GW260:

Mauricio, how does the keyboard feel - is it robust and the keys responsive?

Also, how will the upgrade be done? Will there be a download to a PC or OTA?

Thanks

The keyboard is nice and firm - and responsive. But tiny keys. It is running Android 1.6 and I will try and find out about the update.

I see not much interest in the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro... The discussion on HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy S have a lot of "movement". Perhaps it shows Sony Ericsson has not hit the right spot yet?

I think the problem with the X10 Mini Pro are threefold:

1) SE has shown they are slow off the mark in regards to Android updates, and of course never really communicate when they are being released, and when they do the next version is already out

2) The X10 hasn't exactly received glowing reviews, especially the SE software parts

3) The device is 'too small'; with a 320 x 240 screen I think Android apps would suffer, web browsing wouldn't be worth trying and as you mentioned the keys are tiny.

Just my 2c

The problem is Android 1.6. 2.1 was such a big jump up in functionality and usability that I think now that 2.2 is out, 2.1 is pretty much a baseline.

There is no way I would buy a tablet or phone which wasn't using 2.1 at a minimum, or wasn't straight forward to root and install a custom ROM based off 2.1.

It's success will depend upon how it's marketed, not so much it's OS.

For folks with small hands that like keypads it may be the right tool. But the GZ debate is more focused on OS and upgrades and the technical issues of processor speeds and RAM. Certainly on paper it looks like a very capable device with all the advantages of Android, a slightly larger screen than an E-series Nokia and a full keyboard.

Some people want very compact yet competent handsets, either as secondary devices or because they fit in their err... compact pockets.

Will be great to read your user thoughts.

As with many of these phones, I'd love to try this one for a week and see how it went.

Sometimes you just have to step over the line and live on the other side to fully appreciate something for what it is...and isn't.

I've played with the SE X10 a few times now and I'd be happy with it is my main phone. It felt a bit like the Acer Liquid...which is about $300 cheaper. PB Tech is selling the Liquid this weekend for $599+GST.

That may be Sony's biggest problem. Phones with equivalent - and often better - specs are now much cheaper than their offerings.

Got to play with this phone yesterday and its very fast and responsive (600mhz). It is VERY small but the keyboard is very easy to use. These are getting popular very fast as they are now FREE on a smart80 plan! If anyone wants side by side images (next to iphone/x10/n97mini) leave a comment and ill get to it!

The dummy phone has a nice form factor, reminded me of my Samsung Z400.
The mini will do better than it's big brother I'd image. And not because the X10 will (probably) not continue once the Desire is available, but because the Mini offers a lot of capability in a compact package.... and it's being well promoted....
