The formula for an Android wallpaper is 2 x the screen width by 1 x  the screen height. It won't matter how many Home screens you have. The formula is the same.

So a phone with an 800h x 480w display (portrait) will use a wallpaper that's 800h x 960w.

Here is one I've made from a photo I took with my Galaxy S from Glenfield Rd  Monday, October 4th about 7:35am. It's looking East over Auckland's North Shore to the Hauraki Gulf. The shiny rooves are in Wairau Valley. Rangitoto is at lower right.

I've messed with it a bit in GIMP to make it sharper and enhance the contrasts and colour levels.

The full-size 800x960 image is here on Picasa. Publicly available. Use it if you like it.

Here is a smaller version (480x400) that will NOT work right on the phone. GZ wouldn't allow me to post the full one (too big at 255KB) and the directlink to Picasa also didn't seem to work. Probably need to play with it.

Anyone have any cool wallpapers they made - and own - that they want to share?

Aside: I'd do it in PicsayPro, except the max resolution is 770-ish...and I can't get the full 800. Picsay would work for making wallpapers for lower-res phones (but probably have to make them on a higher res phone)....but it can't do 800x960.

Half-size wallpaper for preview

First, that's a stunning photo.
Second, I've heard the wallpaper needs to be a *.png file.  Is that right?  Not that I have a problem with converting a file to *.png format.

I really like your photo.  Unfortunately I couldn't use it with my customisation with the white font I've got for several transparent widgets.

It's not necessary to be a png. This one is a jpeg. Either works fine as far as I can recall.

I thought I was being clever, but turns out not.  I've found some nice wallpapers on AppBrain but they're the wrong size.  I used SnagIT to resize them but the resolution is shot.

Do you know of an application where you can resize and keep the clarity?   TIA

You can't up-size a 320x480 wallpaper to 800x960 without it looking like crap.

Try to find the original, higher-res images out on the Net. They are often there.....on DeviantArt or similar.

Made another wallpaper. Feel free to use or abuse.

Sunset on Elliott St - canvas effect looks nice on an 800x480 display. Dark band at bottom is launcher-friendly.

GZ-friendly preview version - half-size

..and another one.

Windy Ridge Sunrise  Taken Monday, October 11th 2010 at 07:11am on Kaipatiki Rd.

GZ-friendly mini version for preview. This one looks really nice on my Galaxy S - especially the lock screen. The Sun's glow starts right above the words "phone locked".

Photoshop Smile

OK, that's possibly a bit of overkill for this purpose, but to be honest that's what I use for my Android Wallpapers.

Some very nice wallpapers, though to be honest I'm hesitant to replace the Aurora one I've got currently: http://www.livewallpapers.org/aurora-421/

That one is on my Galaxy S. Very nice. It was still there after a factory reset, so I'm assuming it was bundled.
