I see on JB Hifi's web site they will have the Samsung Galaxy Tab in store on December 8th.

Full price: $1344
Smart 3 plan: $897
Smart 4 Plan; $447

Android v2.2.

The real tablet wars now begin.  :-)

You beat me to it. I was just composing a new thread on exactly this.  So I'll just paste my text below.

I note from various sources that Samsung NZ are releasing the Galaxy Tab next week.  Available handset only for $1350ish, or less with data plan subsidies.
I guess the parallel importers will have to reassess their prices. I note a couple have reduced theirs to less than $1200 (some still $1400-1500).
By my calculations a SGT can be had from Clove for about $NZD1150 (inc freight and GST). $1350 gets you a 32GB iPad and some apps.
Pricing is remarkably close to the AU announced price.
Considering the need to purchase a microSD card as well, the price may just put it out of reach.

So there is some hard thinking to be done, because I was within days of getting a HTC DesireHD.

For those who have already got their hands on the SGT;
Does it seem to be affected by the same lag and gps problems as the SGS?
How easy is it to Root and flash alternate Roms on?
How good is media playback on it?
What is the battery life like?
How do you find its portability (main downside of iPad IMO)?
I have heard Kies software is a nightmare.  How much do you actually need to use it in operating the SGT?

Pricing seems high, although I expect early next year is when the tablets wars will really hit, with Acer, HP, Viewsonic, Notion Ink, Dell, HTC plus a few more I can't think of, and don't forget the dozens of cheaper asian brands you've never heard of.

Then you have to wonder if you really want Version 1.0. with Apple set to release their 2nd Ipad early next year it might just be another step up from the rest. (that is if your an apple fan).

JBHF are the only ones that have advertised it so far.
Since they are an Australian company I wonder if they are sourcing them from Oz? The price is very similar once you take the exchange rate into account. Samsung NZ haven't replied to my email requesting details...

That is REALLY REALLY expensive!  I was in Canada last week (Vancouver) and saw it contract free for $650CAN, which converts to $850NZD, so that is a huge increase.  I should have picked one up!

The one I saw was NOT a contract price, although I don't know the details around if it was SIM locked etc.  Still, that's a $500 difference....

Samsung appear to do lower pricing in markets they are targeting as a priority and "you can buy one if you really want to" pricing in markets they want to cover.....but aren't as interested in (right now....) Maybe these markets are being kept in reserve for a later quarter.

The underlying logic would be determined by their own knowledge of how many of these they can make in a period of time. No point making 50 million units then....what....lock the doors and send everyone home?

Also no point having a killer price if you can't make enough devices to satisfy the demand you've created. We will see lower prices once they either ramp up manufacturing capacity or the primary markets begin to mature. This would even out sales growth over a longer period and avoid BOOM / BUST lumpy sales. The folks running the company will be wanting a nice, steady growth curve over a year or two.
