Hello Fellow Geeks,

Here's my conundrum

I've always favoured small slim phones with a belt clip, because up until now, phones were really just . . . . well . . . . phones

However, with the large scale adoption of Android, iOS, mapping and social networking, a phone has developed into a lot more, and consequently, the screen size has expanded accordingly. Putting something that size in a belt clip, would seem like a bloody good way of getting a painful jab in the ribs every time you sit down or get in a car. Or losing the phone.

I can see myself upgrading from my trusty old Nokia E66 to a Mid-Upper level Android unit (i.e. screen size of 3.8-4.1inches) in the next 6 months, so my question to you all is:

How do you all carry your phones around?
- Pocket?
- Belt clip?
- Case?
- Strap?
- In your man bag/handbag?
- Just remember to carry it around in your hand?

And what . . .ahem . . . protection do you use?

I've got a couple of different hard cases for my Samsung Galaxy S I9000 phone, and a nice leather sleeve (which I'm currently using). All bought off ebay.com.au.

I'm an unconventional woman who rarely uses a handbag (though it does have a handy sized little pocket suited for the phone) but opt for a backpack which also has a little pocket sized right for holding the phone. Of course it's not at all handy if the phone rings.

I would not recommend putting the SGS in your pocket. The back of the phone is plastic and I've heard people cracking it as they sit down. I'd suggest you take it out of your pocket before sitting.

The SGS is a very powerful smartphone and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Front right hand pocket. iPhone. Hasn't suffered yet.
You do need to ensure your pocket is deep enough to place the device below your waist, eg, somewhere that's not going to be fased if you bend at the leg - eg to sit.

I used to belt-clip my phones but agree that with large-screen-format phones it places them at more risk. I prefer to have them screen-inward in my pocket where they're a little protected.

I have to confess to being an iOS user, and I always wear pants with two pockets so I have my wallet in one pocket and iPhone in the other. I have a slim leather sleeve for my iPhone to protect it when I bash my thigh against anything.

I reckon this would work for me for any device up to a 4" display size, but I would question the usefulness of any device with a display in the 4" - 7" range as it would be too large to carry on a belt or in a pocket, yet too small to be worthwhile to carry separately.

a conundrum indeed! I carry my SGS in my suit jacket pocket during the week, or in one of the front facing pockets in my cargo shorts in the weekend.
I'm stuffed when I'm not wearing a jacket or shorts!
I don't have any protectors for my SGS.

This is my no. 1 concern with the SGS. I want to upgrade to a smartphone next year (if the taxman is kind to me), and my current frontrunner choices are the SGS and the iPhone. I really love the iPhone, but my wife already has one so I'm keen to get an Android device in the house. I can't believe the build quality of the SGS, considering its $1000 price tag. I am very much a 'phone in pocket' kinda guy, so not being able to do that without fear of breaking it due to forgetting to remove it from my pocket may well be a deal breaker.

I happily carry my HTC Desire HD (4.3" screen) in my front pocket of my jeans, cargo shorts, suit pants. It also sits easily in my shirt pocket if required. Have a gel case and screen protector on it but I still make sure not to put keys or coins in the same pocket.
Just a word of caution. The compass in my previous smartphone got screwed up by the magnetic clasp in a leather case I bought to put it in. I had to do surgery on the case to remove the magnets and replace with velcro.

Most people on the SGS thread don't leave the phone in their pants while they sit. The crack was mentioned I think by one person. I guess everyone has adapted to removing the phone before they sit.

If you can make the adjustment then it's not really a big deal :-) I'd go for the phone. It's awesome. Android is awesome.

Also you can pick up the SGS at NL and DSE with 20% off, so $799. That's at the moment, and they've had the special price 2 if not 3 times in the last month or so. By the time you figure out if the tax man is looking upon you favourably, it may well have dropped in price yet again.

Yeah, I see no need to rush out and take advantage of that offer right now (or more accurately, to expend the energy arguing the need to the wife ;-)). Theres been 20% deals off Samsung gear quite a bit recently, and by the time I'm in a position to buy, there may well be a new frontrunner :-)

OT: What are the video capabilities of the SGS like? In particular, how well does it cope with videoing concert footage? I took my wifes iPhone 4 to the Paramore and Metallica concerts in October, and was blown away with the results (see here if you're curious).

OT: I've not taken any video at all. But just yesterday someone on the I9000 thread posted videos they've taken. Have a look here. Have to say I was pretty impressed.

Well that drew a response!

It seems amongst the guys, just in a pocket and removing it prior to sitting down seems to be the preferred option.

The Galaxy S, and a few others, have toughened Gorilla Glass, but is anyone using screen protectors as well?

Belt Clip for me, have a very nice magnetic belt clip that seats my phone nicely.

Well designed, looks good and keeps my screen from getting scratched, would recommend it over a pocket any day.

i have the phone in my left front pocket when at work

in the car - moto car dock

at home - i have it in the multimedia dock, connected to my desktop

i dont use any type of protection, how can you enjoy the banana without peeling off the skin?

HTC Desire. Its very solidly built, i've dropped it and even thrown it at the roof accidentally once (tripped over). So theres no issue with having it in my pocket and its not an impractical size no matter what im wearing.
All i have to do is avoid having keys in the same pocket.

Just an IDEOS and an Telecom R6, I usually leave it in my front left pocket or in one of my blazer pockets if I'm at school.
