Hi guys,
Still haven't got my Android yet (still on symbian)

I'm still doing my research and all that.

Today I found out that you have to register your gmail account to use/enter the phone ? Is that right ?

I mean creating a gmail account is No hassle, easy peasy. But it's the syncing i'm a little confused at.

Will it sync all my email contacts from gmail to phone or phone contacts to gmail accounts ?

Like I want my cellphone contacts to be completely separate just like in a normal phone.

Also Do you have to be logged it to gmail all the time from your phone to be able to use the phone ? (that means using data continuously ? no ? )

Hi, you contacts within gmail sync to your phone and vice versa, its seemless, best sync type thing I have ever used.

You dont have to have it available all the time, you can turn the push off, but to be honest it spoils the primary reason for a smart phone. I have a fair amount of daily email, but rarely go over 80MByte/month with gmail sync and a modest amount of browsing and maps.

Yes, it will sync your Gmail contacts to the phone.

When you go to your contacts you've got options as to which to display.  Sim, Phone and Gmail.  If you don't select Gmail then you wont see those contacts.

Having set up your Gmail account on your phone you have access to the Market to search for and d/l applications.

You don't need to log in to see your email, it's just there, becuase you've signed in during the start up wizard.  You can change your auto sync settings (how you pull your gmail email).  And you can turn off data at any time.  Depending on which phone you get, the method to disable your APN will be different.

Ok guys, thanks for the fast reply :)

I guess it's like the iphone only it's less forceful?

But if i don't setup the gmail account then the only thing i won't be able to use is : market + all the sync function right ?
I can still use the phone for normal txting and browsing through wifi , gmap etc etc.

Some things to consider:

The Gmail requirement is also because when you download apps the phone will link those to your account and will be able to offer updates, etc. Also if you buy apps from the marketplace they will need an account to charge it against.

You might be right in wanting the contacts in your phone only, but think of it as backup. If you lose the phone, or if it breaks, you just need to get a new one, enter the same Gmail account and everything is back there.

Now that I've got my contacts backed up with Google sync + Gmail account, I don't think I could go back to anything else.

Seems like y'all like it Smile

It's actually not so much the syncing as to the "always on" data.

I know that in my situation it's best to turn off "always on mobile" + "background data" + "mobile network" because I don't wanna any app using data whatsoever unless I need it too.

Mobile network is the one i need to turn on and off. The rest i'll just turn it to off.

Normal sending and rcving of sms and calling still works with all those turned off right ?

Oh and is there any fast way to switch on "mobile networK" when needed? Or is it just simply creating a shortcut of that (widget) at the home screen?

My current symbian (n95) initiates the connection handshake when i press "GO" for the first time in the web browser and disconnects automatically when i close the app.

Sorry for the boatloads of questions folks Embarassed

From what I can tell you seem to be able to turn just[1] about everything off that you can imagine.

I agree with others about how insainly cool the google integration is... really, wait till you dump a phone in the river or someone nicks it off your desk at work and you'll really get why it's just so fantastic... drop in to DSE, grab a new phone, whack your login details in and wham!

I use wifi everywhere, so I end up chewing up bugger all 3G data expect when I'm making calls, which I do with SipDroid because the quality is actually better and cheaper than the mobile voice.

I just wonder how longs it going to be before the spammer stop earning money from spam and turn to stealing androids just to prove how useful having your phone backed up into the cloud is?!

[1] I'd say 'everything' but I just haven't gone though every setting in 2.2 yet. I've yet to find something you can't turn off.

Thanks for that Don.
I'll probably get my android sometimes in February or around that time.
I just wanna wait to see if DSE or parallel imported will have any new models out.
So far the only one i like from DSE and the one in my budget is the optimus 1 p500.
Stock is low on that right now but i'm sure they'll have new ones coming in by feb11.

On a related point... I signed in with one account on my android tablet, but I haven't seen an option anywhere to sign in with a second account?

Hi dman, which version is your tablet running, if its pre 2.X then you will be running the older gmail client which only allows one account.
