I know it's a silly question but I have tried rooting my phone with instruction guides..

Here are the specs.

Model Number : GT-I9000
Firmware Version : 2.2
Baseband version : I9000SRJP2
Kernel version : 2.6.32.9, root@SE-S604 #9
Build number : FROYO.SRJP3

And also can someone explain what each line means?

I am quite new to this..:(

Your phone wont be rooted unless you intervene.  If you have an app called "Superuser", then your phone is rooted.  You can root your phone by using an app, or by flashing a kernel that includes root.

A fellow Geekzoner from a different thread had a really good explanation of what the baseband (modem) and kernel are for the phone and I've sent a message to him asking if he could pass that information on in this thread too.

Firmware Version 2.2 is Froyo.  Froyo is the latest version of the Android OS available through official methods of upgrading.  Version 2.2.1 is also available but you wont get it via a Kies update, well not with applying a registry hack.

Your Model Number is the model of your phone it's the International version of the Galaxy S.
Kernel version:  Don't be mistaken for thinking your phone is rooted becuase it has "root" in the version number.

I'm not sure what guide/instructions you followed.  I've heard good things about z4root which used to be on the market but removed.

You can read up and access the z4root.apk file from this thread on XDA.

Hi yochankr - welcome to the wonderful world of flashing, rooting, and all other manner of suspect-sounding practices!! Wink

Here's the post I made a while back on the SGS thread about what each component means:

Kernel: This is the heart of the Android O/S, and is the layer that sits between the hardware (CPU, screen, RAM etc) and the applications.  It's responsible for managing resources so that apps always have enough to run correctly.  This is why optimizing it the way Devs like Supercurio & Hardcore do is so crucial to the speed of custom ROMs.

Base ROM (aka PDA/Firmware): This is the Galaxy S-flavoured Android O/S effectively containing all the Galaxy S drivers, but unlike closed-system devs like Microsoft, it's compiled from Source Code that has been 'released' by Samsung.  Because Doc gets the source code, he can do as he likes with it, so removes extraneous bits n pieces, optimizes it carefully, and adds other things like BLN notification etc before compiling it.

Modem (aka Phone/Baseband):  This is the piece of software that actually makes your phone a phone, so it controls voice functionality, as well as sms, mms, wi-fi, 3G, GPS etc.

CSC (Country Specific Code): This is a tiny bit of code that sets your APN settings to those of your local carrier, and also influences which apps you can see in the Market.  There is some debate over whether it's actually necessary - not having an NZ CSC certainly doesn't seem to cause anyone any issues here in NZ.

I hope that clears the first part of your question up.

In terms of rooting, you can try z4root as Neets mentions, but in my experience, this didn't work with the stock Froyo.  I'd suggest you look into SuperOneClick (aka SOC), as it uses a known exploit in Android's ABD (Rage Against The Cage) to gain Root access, and is therefore pretty much unstoppable.  This is how I first rooted my Vodafone Froyo ROM.

The other alternative is to use Odin, and flash a custom kernel like Voodoo, or Hardcore's SpeedMod.

Any questions, fire away!!

WOW thanks guys for all your help!

Now I know what all the complicating numbers and letters mean.

I have read the thread and other forums and am still learning about the whole rooting business :)

Will definately try rooting when I am fully aware of what I am doing lol

Thanks Alot!!

There people are all very helpful, feel free to ask questions. I also asked a lot of questions and did a lot of reading before I reading before getting root access and installing Darky's rom. I used Superone click as posted by nofam. Then I flashed Speedmod Kernel using Odin.
